As a camper, Rooney received the honors of Silver A, Honor Girl, Distinguished Expert in Rie and Senior Camp Spirit. She continued her camping years as a counselor and eventually as JC Mom. Rooney loved singing harmony and melody alike and made sure camp songs were a central part of camp life. She even contributed several of today’s classic campre songs, such as “Each Summer,” “ey Say ere’s a Camp,” and “What Lies Over the Hill.”Much like Rooney, this year’s recipient of the Alleghany Songbird is always helping to teach songs and knows the harmony and melody to nearly all of the song we’ve sung this summer. She comes to class with a smile on her face and always encourages every girl in class to do her best. I am honored to award the 2014 Anne “Rooney” Cargill Alleghany Songbird to a second termer from Fredericksburg, Virginia, Olivia Bell. Seventy-six little gals ages seven to 10 caught the Ghany spirit through a mini week lled with Alleghany magic and traditions. For most girls this was their rst ever Ghany (or any other sleep away) experience. Several girls had attended Family Camp in previous summers, but thought it was WAY more fun without the grown ups...wait a minute! No grown ups? We have grown ups!ere are “grown up” alums who generously give a week away from their families and jobs to give back to the camp we all love best! Veteran Mini Camp sta include: Flo Rowe Barnick, Donna Deeks Boldt, Sarah Paul Deignan, Mary Elizabeth Paul Duke, Katherine Mayo Earls, Kitty Capito Farrar, Ruland Brown Gagne, Annie Tanner Kiefer, Landon Russell Nesser, Harriet Mauck Regen, Ruth Roop Reitz, Stephanie orson Reynolds, Debbie Tiemeyer Richmond, Jen Ramler Spisak, Emily Roop Sullivan, Sandy Stegner, Jennifer Bogle Sutherland, Beth Anne Clark-omas, Laura Weaver, Lelia Graham Lewis Webb, and Jane Oppenheimer Wilson. is summer, we welcomed sta newcomers Liz Payne Allums, Carson Quarngesser Gleberman, and Candie Wright Holland. It is an honor to have the opportunity to give back to Alleghany through voluntary service as a Mini Camp Counselor. We have each gained so much from our camp experiences that it is a joy to contribute to shaping the experiences of the newest group of Ghany girls for our one mini week! We assume tent responsibilities, plan and implement evening activities, and mentor term sta as they prepare for their full summer ahead with campers of their own. Mini Camp staers work hard, but it is a genuine labor of love!To qualify for Mini Camp sta, one must be an alumnae of Camp Alleghany. Having counseling experience, as opposed to simply having attended as a camper, is preferred. Due to the nature of the gals with whom we work (mostly rst time away from home, never-been-to-sleepaway-camp gals) it is preferred that applicants be late 20’s or older. Please note: It is Alleghany’s policy that alumnae may not be Mini Camp counselors while their daughters attend Mini Camp. After September 1, any interested alumnae should contact B.A. Names of those interested will be compiled in the order they were received on a “Mini Sta Wait List.” By January 1, returning sta must commit for the upcoming summer. Depending upon “openings,” B.A. will tap any needed gals from the Sta Wait List and solicit their commitments by February 1.Comments, questions, or letters of interest (dated September 1 or after) are welcome: BA@campalleghany.—BACT New lacrosse attireJust a hanging! We kicked o with our mini camp shows, Billy Goats Gru Chicken Little. Fun was had by all getting into character and into costume, and drama sta hopes to see all of our lovely actresses back again next year!First term, we had the wonderful opportunity to put on the play Shakespeare Was a Feminist, by the notorious Esmeralda Qumkwatt. e play follows a college student’s journey through writing a term paper with the help of her friends, and showcases strong Shakespearean female characters as the proof of the title. It was an honor to work with the playwright herself and to see all of our actresses’ hard work shine on opening night.Second term saw the opening of two shows, Action News and Check Please, both by Jonathan Rand. e rst was a slapstick, tongue-in-cheek, satirical newscast hosted by anchors Jim Pickles and Babs Buttlebee. Some notable characters who made appearances were Jeremiah Crockpot in the kitchen, Jay Walker on crime, and Old Man for opinions. e second show followed the progress of Guy and Girl through the dating pool, as they are set up on a blind date after blind date. Unfortunately, there are slim pickings available for dates. Notable scenes included an overzealous romantic, a mime, a kleptomaniac, a small child, and a psychic who reads feet. Drama sta could not be more pleased and more proud of the girls we got to work with this summer, and we sincerely wish that we can continue to see our actresses grow and glow next summer.—Meg GlebermanHead of Drama2014 Drama Success Notable scenes included an overzealous romantic, a mime,a kleptomaniac, a small child, and a psychicwho reads feet. 9 A Toast to the Kitchen StaWe toast Jane Anne for helping the hoppers with For making tinfoil grills with the hoppers.
