An estimated 47 million adults in the U.S. smoke cigarettes, even though this behavior will result in death or disability for half of all regular users. Tobacco use is the second highest preventable cause of death in the United States resulting in an annual cost of more than $75 billion in direct medical costs. Each year more that 450,000 Americans die from cigarette smoking. In fact, one in every five deaths in the U.S. is smoking related. About 10 million people in the U.S. have died from causes attributed to smoking since the first Surgeon General’s report on smoking and health in 1964. (1994) On average, smokers die nearly seven years earlier than nonsmokers. Every day over 3,000 young people under the age of 18 become regular smokers. Teens who smoke are three times more likely than nonsmokers to use alcohol, eight times more likely to use marijuana, and 22 times more likely to use cocaine. Smoking is associated with a host of other risky behaviors, such as fighting and engaging in unprotected sex.

In the US, an estimated 22 million people, 25% of them young males, use smokeless tobacco. Sales of smokeless tobacco products are on the rise among young adults. Many believe that chewing tobacco & dipping snuff are the “IN” thing to do. One survey showed that 1/3 of the members of the High School Varsity Football & Baseball Teams were chewing or dipping snuff, or both.
People who chew tobacco become as addicted to nicotine as smokers. Oral cancer strikes about 30,000 Americans annually. Because this form of cancer is often discovered late, only 50% of its victims survive longer than 5 years.Some chemicals in smokeless tobacco include Formaldehyde and Benzopyrene
