MsSwagatika Dash Asst Professor SPLS DEFINITION Cathartics are drugs used to relieve constipation or bring out defecation The term laxative is used for mild cathartic whereas purgatives is. are made from cellulose, sodium carboxyl methyl cellulose and karaya gum. act either as lubricants facilitating the passage of compacted fecal material or an anionic surface active agent. Saline cat Cathartics may be defined as those drugs which bring about defecation. They are beneficial in constipation and for expulsion of intestinal parasites and also given for cleaning bowels.. Purgatives are also cathartics which act similarly but are generally mild in their nature of action. While laxatives are the mild type of purgatives, having the same effort but varies in mechanism of action..
