Ancient.eu state

“Ancient

Maya government

was formed on the basis that rulers were thought to have been god-like, which to some might suggest one unified state. However, the consensus amongst anthropologists supports that each major

city

remained its own independent and sovereign entity with its own unique struggles for political power.” (ancient.eu, 2016) ayas.mrdonn.org states “T

he head of the noble family in each city-state had government officials to help him rule his city. He chose the officials. His officials could be a mix of retired warriors, elders, and members of his family.”(mayas.mrdonn.org, 2016)Slide4

Maya’s Architecture By: Carlos

Mayan Architecture, such as ancient temples, store important information that now help people understand culture from before. The famous temple of the inscriptions is an example

(Dorling Kindersley, 2016). Kindersley states, “The Temple of the Inscriptions is situated in the Mayan city of Palenque, in the middle of a tropical jungle. Hidden in the pyramid was the funeral chamber of King Pakal, who ruled for 68 years. He was buried in this magnificent resting place in 683 CE” (Dorling Kindersley, 2016). The Temple of the Inscriptions was built to store and protect the tomb of King Pakal. In his stone coffin, it had been stored with beautiful objects found in Mesoamerica (the region of Mexico and Central America).

(Dorling Kindersley, 2016)

Mayan Arts and crafts By: Carlos Martinez

The Mayans created one of the finest art. They used different materials such as stone, wood, jade, ceramics, and bones to create and decorate their artwork. These materials were also used to build objects that were sacred or served in a function like gathering water (Dorling Kindersley, 2016). Kindersley states, “some of the most striking works of art are the Maya’s portraits of themselves. These portraits help us understand their way of life, methods of warfare, costumes, and beliefs” (Dorling Kindersley, 2016). Because the Mayans were so talented and creative with their arts and crafts, they were able to create portraits of themselves. This skill now helps archaeologists to understand the different lifestyles of the ancient Mayans.

The Mayans religion involved several aspects of nature, astronomy and rituals. Most Gods represented a form in nature, for example, Sun God, Kinich Ahau, or Maize God, Yum Kaax. The Mayans were known for their calendars and astronomical buildings. These were used during their religious rituals. According to Religionfacts states, “

The Maya worshipped a pantheon of nature gods, each of which had both a benevolent side and a malevolent side. The most important deity was the supreme god Itzamná, the creator god, the god of the fire and god of the hearth”(

Religionfacts,2015).

Maya’s religion

According to Cosmology and Religion, “

Most Maya today observe a religion composed of ancient Maya ideas, animism and Catholicism. Some Maya still believe, for example, that their village is the ceremonial centre of a world supported at its four corners by god's”(

Cosmology and Religion, 2015).

(C

Maya’s religion

According to

Cosmology and Religion, “Maya cosmology is not easy to reconstruct from our current knowledge of their civilization. It seems apparent, however, that the Maya believed Earth to be flat and four-cornered. Each corner was located at a cardinal point and had a colour value: red for east, white for north, black for west, and yellow for south. At the centre was the colour green”(Cosmology and Religion, 2015).

According to

Cosmology and Religion, “Some Maya also believed that the sky was multi-layered and that it was supported at the corners by four gods of immense physical strength called "Bacabs". Other Maya believed that the sky was supported by four trees of different colours and species, with the green

, or silk-cotton tree, at the centre”(Cosmology and Religion, 2015).

Mayan economy

About Education states, “The Maya did not use ‘money’ in the modern sense: there was no universally accepted form of currency which could be used anywhere in the Maya region” (About Education, 2014). The Maya did not buy or trade objects with money. During the time, currency was not accepted or valued. Instead, the Maya traded goods for goods (About Education, 2014).

Regentsprep.org states

“Mayan farmers produced crops such as, corn, beans, and squash. Trade in agricultural products was the basis for the strong Mayan economy. Products such as feathers, honey, and cocoa were traded across Central America” (regentsprep.org, 2016). Mayan farmers produced and collected crops like corn and beans. These farmers traded their agriculture for other goods in return. Mayan agriculture was a strong trading product during the time (Regentsprep.org, 2016).

Mayan trading systems

Latin American History states “The

Ancient Maya civilization

had an advanced trade system consisting of short, medium and long trade routes and a robust market for a range of goods and materials. Modern researchers have made use of a variety of methods to understand the Maya economy, including evidence from excavations, illustrations on pottery, scientific “fingerprinting” of materials such as obsidian and examination of historical documents.” (Latin America History, 2016) The ancient Maya civilization had different types of trade routes consisting of long, short, and medium distances. Ancient Mayans traded a variety of goods and material consisting of different foods and materials such as obsidian and pottery art sculptures (Latin America History 2016).

Noble status and the occupation in which a noble served were passed on through elite family lineages” (Tarlton Law Library, 2014). The Mayan Society was like a casp system except you could move up if you married a

noble, commoner, serf, or slave. (Tarlton Law Library, 2014)

Social structure rules

Don states, “Occupations for Maya men was limited to their father's occupation. If your father was a farmer, you were a farmer” (Lin Donn, 2016). Mayan men had limited choices of occupations due to their father. A Mayan man would have to work in an occupation that their father had worked as, for example, a farmer (Lin Donn, 2016). Donn says, “Women, however, could be involved in government, economics, and religion, as well as responsible for hearth, home, and children. Still, Maya women could not marry outside their social class” (Lin Donn, 2016). Women had a lot of say in ancient Mayan life. For example, they had a say in government, they could become involved in economics and religion, and they were responsible for home, children, and hearth (Lin Donn, 2016).Slide25
