Determining your Face Shape

Finding your face shape will help you to determine hair styles that will look good on you.

The face is divided into three zones:

Zone 1

- forehead to eyebrows

Zone 2

- eyebrows to end of nose

Zone 3

- end of nose to bottom of chinSlide3

Oval

About 1 ½ times longer than its width across the brow. The forehead is slightly wider than the chin.

Can wear almost any hairstyle.

When cut correctly, most hairstyles will

beautifully

display your oval features.

Remember, oval is the ideal shape so the goal for the next six shapes is to balance the face to create the illusion of having an oval.Slide4

Round

Facial contour:

Round hairline (zone 1) and round chin line (zone 3); wide face.

Goal:

To create the illusion of length to the face, which makes the face appear slimmer.

Hairstyle: Height or volume on top and closeness or no volume at the sides (zones 2 and 3).A round face shape will work well with a layered cut. A blunt cut is okay if it falls below the jawline. Keep in mind that graduated sides, as well as, very short cuts will make the round face appear fuller”Slide5

Oblong

Facial contour:

Long, narrow face with hollow cheeks.

Goal:

To make the face appear shorter and wider.

Hairstyle: Hair fairly close to the top of the head. Volume on the sides (zone 2) creates the illusion of width. The hair should not be too long, as this would elongate the oblong shape of the face. Chin length (bottom of zone 3) is the most effective. An oblong face shape would best benefit from a cut that stops as the chin. Add fullness at the temples with gentle graduation. Too much fullness is not necessary at the top. Round out the face at zone 2, for increased illusion of an oval shape.”Slide6

Diamond

Facial contour:

Narrow forehead, extreme width through the cheekbones, and narrow chin.

Goal:

To reduce the width across the cheekbone line.

Hairstyle:

Increase the fullness across the forehead (zone 1) and jawline (zone 3) while keeping the hair close to the head at the cheekbone line (zone 2) helps create an oval appearance. Avoid hairstyles that lift away from the cheeks or move back from the hairline on the sides near the ear area.A diamond face shape can have balance with a blunt, graduated, or layered cut that is full in the top with tapered sides. Be careful not to add graduated fullness at the cheekbones. Length that falls at least to the chin area will give the appearance of an oval shape.Slide7

Inverted Triangle(Heart)

Facial contour:

Wide forehead and narrow chin line.

Goal:

To decrease the width of the forehead (zone 1) and increase the width in the lower part of the face (zone 3).

Hairstyle: Reduce the width of the forehead with the hair close to the head with no volume. A fringe is recommended. Gradual increase in the width of the silhouette in the cheekbone area and near the ears (zone 2). Keep the style its widest at the jaw (zone 3) and neck area.A heart-shaped face can easily benefit from an elevated cut or layered cut. Giving too much height to the top will over accentuate the heart face. Lengths that maintain fullness below the chin area add balance and draw attention away from the narrow chin line.Slide8

Square

Facial contour:

Wide at the temples (zone 2), narrow at the middle third of the face (zone 3), and squared off at the jaw.

Goal:

To offset or round out the square features.

Hairstyle:

Soft hair around the temples and jaw, with the shape or silhouette close to the head form. Volume around the areas between the temples and jaw (zone 3) from added width around the ear area.A square face shape needs a cut that falls below the ears and softens the forehead and jaw line. Get a cut that aligns the face and flows freely. Layered cuts work great. A blunt cut will give more angles. Be mindful of tapered sides; you want to draw attention away from already defined angles.
