It does have country sections which contain considerable useful cruising information. The RCC Pilotage Foundation ( publishes several pilots, including those covering the Spanish Mediterranean coast and North Africa. The website contains details of all these and, in the case of some, a library of additional photos which could not be included in the pilots themselves. There is also a Passage Planning Guide which includes routes from the UK to the Mediterranean and within the Mediterranean. If you find the Pilot Book is incorrect in any respect or incomplete or you have lay-up information or other comments on harbours, marinas or anchorages, please let us know. Also please give us your personal comments as to the attractiveness or otherwise of a place since these comments are one of the most valuable features of the Updates, as are also your ratings under any of the suggested headings where you have any You can submit the information in any format you like - what is important is that we hear from you - but if it’s possible please send your report electronically. GENERAL INFORMATION Marine Nature Reserves and Fish Farms A significant number of new marine nature reserves are being created each year. These are not necessarily included in the Pilot books. A number of fish farms have also been established which are not marked on Admiralty charts especially in the Golfo di Oristano, the Golfo Cagliari and the area between Cap Ferro and SARDINIA, SICILY & MALTA Italian Waters Pilot by Rod Heikell – 8th Edition Information Cut-Off Date: 03/12 Cruising Association Mediterranean Section Page 3 Pilot Updates and Lay-up Information Following considerable pressure from Italian maritime/trade organisations, the proposed legislation regarding an Italian Boat tax has been extensively amended. In summary, the new tax is a yearly "ownership" tax and is payable only by those tax resident in Italy. It will take effect from May 1st 2012. This tax is liable irrespective of the yacht's port of registry (Italian or foreign flagged) and irrespective of whether the yacht is based within or outside Italian waters. The latest information, together with details of the actual tax rates, may be found at ......... http://www.cruising.org.uk/cruising_information/cruising_guides/country/italy Many beach areas are now marked off by yellow buoys, for the protection of swimmers. Anchoring or use of outboard motors is not allowed within 300 metres of the beach. There are special access routes for runabouts, dinghies and sail-boards etc. This has generally restricted the area for anchoring in many bays; updates now note significant buoyed off areas.In certain areas one will be moved off if one has anchored within the 300 metres of a swimming beach. Restricted & Protected Areas There are now many areas around Italy and its offshore islands that are “Aree Marine Protette”. Some are totally prohibited, others can be passed through possibly with a speed restriction and some allow anchoring. Details are now in the latest Heikell, Pagine Azurre and a small booklet – “Guida alle Reserve Marine”. Every Italian boat must carry the latter document. It is recommended that anyone sailing in Italian waters has one or both of these publications. First, it will keep you out of trouble. Secondly, they are useful if asked to move and you are not sure why. It shows the restricted areas. Other Pilots and General GuidesPagine Azzurre, (Il Portolano dei Mari d’Italia) (annually updated) in Italian, gives excellent listings of the facilities, both in ports and ashore. The latest prices for many marinas are given as part of the port information. Telephone numbers of Harbour Masters etc. and hours of duty are also given. A MUST BUY!NB: One can now view this pilot book on line in English at www.pagineazzurre.com/english Pilote Cotier, Vol 3, Corse and Sardaigne NE, by Alain Rondeau, 7th Edition, published by Praxys Marine, in French, has clear chartlets and extensive aerial photos, covering the NE Sardinian coast from Capo Testa to Cala Gonone, with good coverage of the Maddalena Isles. Corsica and N Sardinia, 2nd edition, by J Marchment, published by the RCC Pilotage Foundation, in 2001, which is a revision of Brandon's La Corse, has been expanded to cover the Northern part of Sardinia. This new publication has not been examined so no corrections are available. and similar publications are also recommended for general tourist information. I.Piana/Pelosa Passage xx° xx'.x N 257 h 0xx° xx'.x E Comments by Date Very picturesque ancorage south of Isola Piana. Clear blue water over sand, excellent holding. Exposed to winds from east. Can be crowded in day time but only a handful of boats at night.05/10 Page Fornelli Passage 40° 59'.1 N 257 h 008° 13'. E Comments by Date Passage from West We found this a most interesting passage. The leading lines for both legswere clear with binoculars, making it easy except when your eyes. The Pilot Guide indicated depths going down to three metres,but I don't think we found anything under about five. Half mile W of Capo Falcone, head towards a red house low down on Isola Asinara. The beacons, which have black and white vertical bands on oblong boards when they are in line, appear to the right of the church, and left of a group of low white buildings. When the beacons are in line, the white buildings are behind them. The beacon on Pta Salippi is white 6/03 09/05 Ancora 258 h 008° 13'.1E Comments by Date General We found the best anchorage in N. Sardinia (off Anchora Yacht Club). Clear, warm water and good holding in sand….. and lots of room. (optional). Free showers. 06/09 Anchorage Sign on inside of outer breakwater says no anchoring in outer harbour, but boats do. However, difficult to find good holding. Muddy bottom on W side & we dragged when wind blew up from South when it is v. exposed Porto Torres 260 h 008° 23'.95 E Comments by Date General Marina office telephone number is now 079 503873. Small harbour situated to the West of the main large commercial harbour and he has some storage waiting area in the water in a small harbour. Access to the yard by land is very secure. His ability with English is limited. 80 ton Travellift and a huge storage facility on the hard and in large buildings undercover. The cost last winter was 1,800 Euros for 6 months storage, lift out + lift in + pressure wash. Good quality cradles. Felice is a very helpful and professional man to deal with as are his staff at the yard. You can also work on your own boat or ask Marina Service to do it for you. 1/08 10/11 Castelsardo 261 h 008° 42'.28 E Comments by Date Dangers If coming from Nth beware of low rocky outcrop off the point under the castle (visible in photo P. 261) Went alongside fuel berth in early evening and able to stay overnight 06/09 Other Good bus service runs E & W along coast with a stop inside the marina. Many reports over the years that the Castle, museum and old town are well worth a visit. Facilities at Castelsardo are greatly improved from May 2009 by the opening in the marina, right opposite the visitors’ jetty, of a large well-stocked SISA supermarket. There is also now a small chandlery, a couple of those designer clothing shops, and a branch of Europcar. We hired a car for 24 hrs in June for 65 euros, a convenient and economic way of effecting crew changes through either Alghero or Olbia airports. The berthing fees at Castelsardo remain the cheapest on the island (24 eu for 13 metres in June). There are 280 berths for vessels up to 20 m with depths 3 – 7 m. 09/08 acilities Small crane seen. Small chandlers nearby. One moderate sized supermarket right by the marina. Three small alimentations, meat shops and a fish shop. All within a few metres. Several restaurants. Tel +39 079 694184 This rather pleasant little holiday resort is taking off, as is the marina. Page Anchorage: Capo Testa (Baia Reparata) 264 h 009º 09’. 6 E Comments by Date Anchotage Shelter We sat out 3 days of SW/W/NW F7+ winds, with no trouble. At times the wind howled through from La Colba, but we were tucked in a bit further NW than where the anchor symbol is shown on the chartlet. There are more weed/rocky patches further in, but the water’s shallow enough to see the sandy bits and you avoid the swell which works in to the area further out. 08/05 Provisions There’s a small mini market (the white building) immediately behind the beach and a couple of restaurants in the village (1/2 mile North) beyond that, it’s a good 2 mile walk (no buses) across to Santa Teresa di Gallura. Stick to the road, as the apparent “short-cut” through the nature reserve, is actually about a mile further! 1/08 Baia Marmorata 41° 15'.2 N 265 h 09° 14'.7 E Comments by Date AnchorageAnchored in 3m in mud & weed off inlet opposite Conca Verde. Good shelter in strong easterlies. Pontoons off Porto Pozzo but mostly small boats . Village has 2 small s/markets & good greengrocer & pharmacy. 07/09 IntroductionandPilot Page 8
