Soil Sleuthing: Discovering Georgia Plants and Trees
Slide2Prickly Pear Cactus
The cactus is one type of plant that grows with large grains. The cactus doesn’t need much water, so it is able to survive in areas that don’t get a lot of rain.
The cactus and other arid plants are more than able to thrive in soil that is essentially just crushed rock. This type of soil drains faster then any other soil, so it does not retain water very well. This soil can be found on Georgia’s coasts.
Slide3The Live Oak
The live oak, along with many other native plants, grows really well in this type of soil.
This soil can get very moist, which is perfect for growing trees like the live oak and crops for farmers. The live oak grows a moss called Spanish Moss. The live oak is Georgia’s state tree. There is a mixture of sand, silt, and clay in this soil. This soil can be found in the Coastal Plains region of Georgia.
Slide4The Georgia Pine Tree
The Georgia Pine is can grow in soils with very, very tiny grains. This soil retains water really well, which helps the tree grow large and strong.
There are times when it can be very difficult to grow plants and trees in this soil because the soil get either really dry or over saturated. This type of soil can be found in the Piedmont region of Georgia

Slide34Now that you have figured out which trees go in which habitats by learning about their soil types… it’s time for a new challenge!
Go outside with a camera and take a picture of the soil that you see at your playground. Do some detective work and find out if that is a good type of soil to build a playground on. Remember to look at weathering because that can really change the look of an outdoor park or playground!
After you have completed that sleuthing come back and write and friendly, informational letter to your principal telling them if you think the playground was built on good soil. Be sure to explain why or why not.
