My Name Is Not Refugee by Kate Milner 5 Many thousands of people have become refugees looking for somewhere safe to live. Lots of people in Ukraine are having to leave their homes right now. It is over two years since their country was invaded by neighbouring Russia and it is not safe to live there anymore. Images from BBC News website 6 This animation is based on actual drawings by 11-year-old Maxym and other Ukrainian children living through the horrors of the Ukraine war. The children and families of Ukraine have now endured over a year of devastation and displacement. Children are caught in the crossfire of ongoing hostilities, while schools, hospitals and other critical infrastructure continue to be damaged or destroyed. Two out of every three Ukrainian girls and boys have been forced to flee their homes. We are going to show our empathy and compassion for Ukraine by learning and sharing their language – to show we are thinking of them. 6 7 Each year, the Stephen Spender Prize for poetry in translation includes a special ‘Spotlight’ language category. In 2023, to show support for Ukraine and as part of the Stephen Spender Trust’s wider ‘Celebrating Ukrainian Culture’ project, the Spotlight language was Ukrainian. As part of our Spotlight on Ukraine, we are going to translate a poem from Ukrainian into English.
