28 July 2022 Building your career in the Civil Service My personal reflections Kate Guthrie Deputy Director, Strategic Performance 13 September 2023 My Civil Service career path Business Change Manager Programme Manager Programme/Portfolio Director Senior Leader HR Change Manager Communications Manager Senior Practitioner Practitioner Foundation Practitioner Corporate Services Delivery Cross discipline leadership HEO AA AO EO Project Delivery Policy Officer & Private Office Policy Delivery Contract Manager Commercial SEO G7 G6 SCS1 Development programmes, professional qualifications and lots of on-the-job learning and development Cross-professions/ functions All roles outside of London SCS1 Cross-government accountability My own personal learning and development The harder lessons I’ve learnt It’s ok to be my type of leader Don’t over-commit Try not to overthink the things I say Don’t give up - it took me 3 attempts at Grade 7 board Don’t go too early… but don’t stay too long either Keep calm, especially when things don’t go to plan The things that have kept me inspired, motivated and happy Having a plan - sometimes Choosing the right L&D Seeing the benefits of my work The chance to build a brilliant team Building connections and networks across government Some great line managers and leaders Switching off until tomorrow 3 Now: focusing my development on the things that fill my time as a Senior Civil Servant 4 Navigating the politics Problem solving Connecting/ influencing across my organisation Checking I/we are doing the right things Thinking about your own development - my general hints and tips 5 Be yourself Be brave Find a mentor - even better, a sponsor Keep reflecting on strengths and areas for improvement Always have someone you can test your thinking on - colleague/coach Don’t think there is one model of a perfect civil servant Remember that those more senior don’t have all the answers Go for a job when you feel confident you can do some of it Be curious - keep questioning and testing Stick to your promises Thank you Happy to chat separately kate.guthrie@gpa.gov.uk
