HIV/AIDS Activism “How to Survive a Plague” is a documentary about the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the ‘80s and ‘90s. It depicts the story of activists pushing back against the federal government's response to the epidemic. HIV/AIDS Activism 1982: AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is officially named by the CDC. 1987: ACT Up (the AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power) is founded. They led direct actions to end the AIDS crisis. 1987: ACT Up’s first protest happened on Wall Street. They demand the release of HIV treatments from the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) to save more lives. 1988: ACT UP & ACT NOW coalition shut down the FDA at the Washington, D.C. offices. HIV/AIDS Youth Activism In 1991, ACT UP's Youth Education Life Line (YELL) organized a sexual health education campaign, demanding the New York City Board of Education to vote in support of condom distribution to high school students on their campuses. HIV/AIDS Youth Activism 1991: NYC Board of Ed. voted 4-3 to approve condom distribution in public high schools. 1991: YELL defeated an amendment that would have given parents the right to decide if their children could receive condoms in public high schools. 1992: YELL protested Christian fundamentalists and promoted HIV/AIDS education at the NYC Board of Ed meetings. 1995: YELL protested the NYC Board of Ed’s decision to end condom demonstrations & the district’s failure to include AIDS prevention education.
