Advice for Interacting with News Media Emily Lakdawalla (planetary.org) Based on a workshop by George Merlis (masterthemedia.com) Before the Interview Do not do an interview in response to a cold call Set a time for a call back Research the reporter (or ask your PIO to) Find out level/trustworthiness Prepare Develop an agenda: 2 to 5 points Read article that prompted media request Practice Ask PIO or friend to shoot you questions During the interview Respect your audience Don’t condescend. Avoid jargon & acronyms. Quell irritation. Do provide context. Speak in soundbites Complete sentences: subject, verb, object, end thought, go to next thought. Avoid speculation If you don’t understand/don’t like a question, bridge to your agenda There’s no such thing as “off the record” Follow up Random Tips for Radio and TV Appearance No loud patterns or stripes. Take off badges and lanyards. Ask about hair/makeup. Ask someone how you look. Bring props Posture Sit on front of chair and sit up straight Ask where they want you to look Use your hands and don’t be afraid to show your passion Tips for Videoconferencing Lighting Quiet location Natural light is best with window in front or to side, NOT rear Place camera at eye level (may need to put laptop on a box) Use earbuds or a headset Make eye contact with camera, not screen
