slide1. Background
One pathway of the biological pump, the active transport of carbon from the surface ocean to the mesopelagic by zooplankton diel vertical migration (DVM), remains largely unquantified in many ocean export models
Analysis
Developed a simple representation of zooplankton DVM and implemented it in a global export model as a thought experiment to illustrate the effects of DVM on carbon export and mesopelagic biogeochemistry
The model is driven by diagnostic satellite measurements of net primary production, algal biomass, and size structure
Findings
Diel vertical migration is a significant contributor to carbon export out of the euphotic zone, about 16% of total global export & an even larger fraction in the subtropics
Significance
The new model provides a framework for incorporating DVM into global ocean carbon models, building on the growing field data from NASA EXPORTS and other field efforts Modeling Impacts of Zooplankton Diel Vertical Migration on Ocean Biological Carbon Export
