slide2. Coursework In this coursework you will explore the causes of the 2008 financial crisis, with special reference to four EU countries – Portugal, Ireland, Greece and Spain.

The coursework accounts for 20% of the marks for the Behavioural Finance course.

You should submit a report comprising 800-1000 words by 15th December 2013. You can either e-mail the Report to me (kahmad@cs.tcd.ie) or hand in a paper to Rebecca Owens, Postgraduate Secretary for the MSc in Finance programme.
slide3. 2008 Financial Crisis
The debate about this crisis is polarised, in that we blame one group and ascertain angelic qualities to others.

Your task is to look at both sides of the argument: Modern financial institutions have the capability to provide liquidity at a global level – almost first time in the history of finance. However the agencement – the network of interacting people and machines essential to conduct modern finance – is poorly understood and open to abuse. There are problems with understanding financial markets where laws of physics/biology may help to understand some financial phenomenon but the practice of this human enterprise is not easy to comprehend. slide4. 2008 Financial Crisis
Your report should describe factually the role of at least two stakeholders – regulators, traders, financial institutions, the news media, auditors, consulting firms, ratings firms….

You should conclude your report with your own views about the nature and causes of the 2008 financial crisis.

There is a vast literature on the subject: Please select authoritative published sources wherever possible. (The following slide comprises some of the sources relevant to the 2008 financial crisis.)

Please include a bibliography of sources consulted and clearly attribute you are using any source material. Coursework
slide5. 2008 Financial Crisis
The US Congress has conducted an inquiry in the 2008 financial crisis and has published its report with 22 key recommendations.

The free market oriented bodies like the American Enterprise Institute have published their own report comprising dissenting views on the nature and causes of the crisis.

You might like to a research paper that analyses the US Congress Report. Coursework
