Best Practices: Institutional Study Abroad Committees USG International Summer Workshop Today’s Presenters Lorie Paulez Director of Education Abroad Georgia Institute of Technology Liz Havey Assistant Director of Education Abroad Georgia College Kory Saunders Study Abroad Coordinator Columbus State University Institutional Profiles Georgia Tech: Large, public, most selective Research I Institution (25,000 students) Approx. 75% of students study STEM subjects 54% of undergrads have international experience by graduation Many international opportunities: 45 faculty-led programs, 75+ exchange programs, Global Internships, embedded programs, service-learning Institutional Profiles Georgia College: Mid-size, public, liberal arts institution (approximately 6,000) Degrees in Science, Social Sciences, Humanities, Arts, Business, Education, and Health Science Award winning Education & Nursing programs Five year strategic goal to send 30% of students abroad at least once Currently offer 18 faculty led programs, 25 exchange partners and relationships with 3 Third Party Providers & two state wide consortia Institutional Profiles Columbus State University: Regional, public institution, nationally distinctive programs in the arts, education, business, nursing and more (8,200 students) Approximately 200 students study abroad each year. CSU offers 20+ faculty-led programs, exchange programs, direct enrollment programs, service learning, global internships, and an international independent study option Winner of the 2014 Senator Paul Simon Award for Comprehensive Internationalization Study Abroad Sub-Committee at Georgia Tech Created in 1997 by the Provost as an official sub-committee of the Institute’s Undergraduate Curriculum Committee (IUCC) and the Graduate Curriculum Committee (IGCC) Charged with acting for its parent committees on academic matters related to study abroad programs Members include: 1 member from IGCC, 2 from IUCC (one to serve as Chair) 3 at-large members of the academic faculty 3 ex-officio members or their designated representatives (Executive Director of International Education, Provost, Registrar) Dean of Students Staff to the SAC is the Director of Education Abroad GT also has a separate Travel Warning Committee and a Crisis Mgt Team Study Abroad Sub-Committee at Georgia College The Study Abroad Committee is a standing committee established by the Provost in 2016 (Former iteration was less formal) The committee is charged with approving proposals for faculty led programs and awarding scholarships to study abroad students Committee members are selected by the Deans of the four colleges The Assistant Director of Education Abroad serves as chair The Risk Management Committee is an unofficial committee of critical individuals invited by the AVP for International Education This group reviews travel to travel warning destinations and helps address
