Colonialism and the Search for Change in the 19th C Housekeeping Final Presentations Assignment posted It is a VERY LONG DOCUMENT, with the first three pages outlining the description and requirements, and following three pages with possible ideas for your paper I would advise you to start choosing your groups for the final project ASAP Once you have your group and topic, please email either of the GTAs and let them know Will give you 10 minutes during the next class on THU to discuss among yourselves, and will open up private chat at that time If we haven’t heard back from you, will assign you groups after October 6th Third Primary Source analysis assignment will be posted Thursday, due October 13th Plan The influx of wealth from the new world, revolutionary political transformations, and then the Industrial Revolution changed the world’s balance of power, shifting its locus from the east to the west While Europe did not gain uncontested control over other peoples, a global reordering took place Chapter 16 seeks “to give voice to the visions of those who opposed global capitalism and European and North American colonialism” Context is key to understanding these “people’s movements” arising across the world in this period After a brief introduction and a global context, I will start by talking about: Growing European colonialism in Asia, focusing on India and China, and responses to changing contexts The decline of the great Muslim Empires, and how that promoted millenarian and prophetic movements in today’s Saudi Arabia, West Africa Similar movement of revival in non-Islamic Southern Africa with the Zulu state Alternative Visions of the Nineteenth Century Protest movements emerged to challenge the nineteenth-century order that was rooted in the embrace of industrial capitalism, the nation-state, and colonization Movements were led by prophets, political radicals, and ordinary people and expressed the discontent of groups marginalized and threatened by the nineteenth-century order Movements illustrated alternative visions of the future Movements were regionally distinct and reflected local circumstances and responses of local people to global changes Most were defeated, but they represented a counterpoint to dominant views, expressed concerns and desires of marginalized peoples, and had a lasting impact on policies imposed by ruling elites Context is Key Dissidents, rebels, and their actions depended on their local traditions and the degree of contact with the effects of industrial capitalism, European colonialism, and centralizing nation-states None of
