Global Warming Global warming is the long run rise in the average temperature of the Earth’s climate system, primarily due to human activities such as burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial processes that release large amount of green house gases into the atmosphere.
The most important greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O).
02
Causes of global warming Deforestation:
Plants plays an important role in regulating the climate because they absorb carbon dioxide from the air and release oxygen back into it.
When vegetation is removed or burnt, the stored carbon is released back into the atmosphere as CO2, contributing to global warming.
2.Burning fossil fuels:
The combustion of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas for energy and transportation is the largest source of greenhouse gas emission.
These activities release CO2, CH4 and other atmospheric pollutants contributing significantly to global warming
03
3. Industrial processes:
Certain industrial processes such as cement production and chemical manufacturing release large amount of greenhouse gases.
The production and use of synthetic chemicals contribute to global warming.
4. Agriculture:
Agricultural practices including livestock farming and rice production, produce methane emission.
The use of fertilizers also releases nitrous oxide (N2O) another potent greenhouse gas.
5. Industrialization and urbanization;
More fossil fuel consumption.
More pollution
6. Volcanic activity:
Major volcanic eruption release large amounts of gases and paticulates into the atmosphere.
7. Solar variability:
Changes in the sun’s energy output can influence earth’s climate over a long period.
8. Surface warming:
Human activities are making the surface of the earth surface hotter.
9. Natural Greenhouse gas emission;
Natural processes like volcanic eruption, wildfires, and decomposition of organic matter release gases like carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide into the atmosphere .
Effects of global warming Rise in the sea level:
As a result of global warming, glaciers and ice sheets melts which cause sea level to rise.
Leads to flooding in coastal areas, loss of low lying island
2. Biodiversity loss:
Disrupts ecosystems and cause the extinction of plant and animal species.
3.Heat waves:
Leads to frequent heat waves and intense heat in India.
These heat waves can cause widespread health problems, particularly among vulnerable populations such as the elderly and children.
4. Water scarcity:
Global warming is also causing the changes in precipitation patterns leading to more frequent and severe draughts in many pats of India..
06
5. Crop failure:
The change in precipitation patterns lead to crop failure particularly in region where agriculture is rain fed. This leads to food scarcity and losses of the farmers.
6. Floods:
Global warming is leading to major climate change resulting in floods in many parts of the country.
This can damage homes, infrastructure and crops and can lead to displacement of people.
07
7. Ocean acidification:
The absorption of excess CO2 by the ocean can lead to acidification which can harm marine life and disrupt ocean ecosystem.
8. Impact on human health:
Heat wave can lead to death and different kinds of diseases.
Floods and storms can cause injuries and fatalities.
The disruption of food and water supplies can also lead to malnutrition and water borne diseases.
