Overview of Advocates for Justice and Education Inc. Training - Advocacy - Support The District of Columbia Parent Training and Information Center History Founded in 1996 Initial pilot began with 16 families Created to address injustices and the denial of basic special education services Mission Statement AJE’s mission is to educate parents, youth, and the community about the laws governing public education, specifically for children with special needs. It is our mission to make the public aware of the consequences of institutional negligence of children with or without disabilities and to promote school accountability. Programs Parent-to-Parent Parent Training and Information Center (PTI) Transition Advocacy Project (TAP) Direct Services Community Education DC Family to Family Health Information Center (DC HIC) DC Parent Information Network (DC PIN) Legal Services Parent-to- Parent This program provides leadership training and a supportive network of parents. Leadership Institute Parent Support Workers Parent to Parent Support Group Padre a Padre Resource and Information Center A comprehensive resource library and training center. The Center offers parents information on special education laws, specific disabilities, the latest research on treatment and interventions, resources, and adaptive technology. Transition Advocacy Project This project provides youth ages 13-26 with support, advocacy, information and training in order to improve their involvement with their educational planning. Anacostia Senior High School Youth-Led IEP meetings “Best Me I Can BE” Autism Travel Training Program Youth-to-Youth Support Group Every 4th Friday of every month 4:30pm-6:00pm Direct Services Free of charge for situations in which a 3rd party intervention is necessary. Advice and Counsel Brief Services Extended Services Legal Support Community Education AJE provides workshops and trainings for professionals, community, and parents. The workshops and trainings are free of charge. Community Outreach Policy Discussion Information Sessions DC Family to Family Health Information Center (DC HIC) DC HIC provides support, resources, and training to families of children with special health care needs and the professionals that serve them. Mary’s Center La Clinca Del Pueblo Howard University Hospital DC Parent Information Network (DC PIN) DC PIN provides family navigation and care coordination services to help families navigate the health care system and health care programs. Family Navigators Peer Support Workers Legal Services Provides direct services in cases where there is a legal issue and 3rd party interventions are necessary Handles: Suspensions (Medium & Long-term) Expulsions When Should a parent Visit AJE? Parent rights Questions regarding special education, ESL, SST, transitioning, etc.
