Finding information One of the most traditional roles of a library is to provide people information, or help them find it.
In the past, this meant that libraries would be full of books held for reference only, crammed with information. 2
03
Finding information Due to the growth of material held electronically on-line, the need to hold all those books has declined.
Not all of them have gone. In Park Mains we have a small reference section, mostly language dictionaries. 3
04
Finding information Our Non-Fiction books for borrowing are full of information, but if you need more, where will you go?
The main answer now is to go on-line, but how do you trust the sites you are visiting. 4
05
Finding information The main free on-line encyclopaedia (a store of information) is Wikipedia. Here you will find information on just about any topic you are interested in.
However, due to the way Wikipedia works, anybody can edit a page of information, with nobody to check it. 5
06
Finding information As such, although the information may be right, you can not always be sure.
An encyclopaedia which is paid for, has to make sure that the information within it must be right or people would not pay for it and as such, you can trust it more. 6
07
Finding information You could pay for access to a company, or since you have a library card from Renfrewshire Leisure, you can access the services they have partnered with.
These include Britannica Library Edition and Oxford Reference. Ask in the library about how to log-on. 7
08
Finding information You could also look to newspapers and magazine articles to give you answers. Again you need to be sure of who is writing the information and why.
Renfrewshire Libraries provides access to PressReader for these materials. 8
09
Finding information Else ware on-line, a YouTuber may tell you lots of things, but who is funding them.
There are many news organisations. Some are funded directly by governments, like RTN from Russia. Some are paid for by advertising revenue, ITN. 9
10
Finding information The BBC is funded by all the adults of the UK through the licence fee and is trusted across the world as a source of correct and balanced information. But even it can get it wrong and some people do not trust it due to the links with the government. 10
11
Finding information You will learn which sources of information you can trust and use in work you submit in school. Just remember to say if you have the information you have used came from somewhere and include the source. That is called referencing.
If in doubt, ask the librarian or a teacher. 11
