State of play The EU Blue Economy: Established sectors represent around 1.5% of the EU’s total GVA and 2% of total EU employment – an underestimate of the total Blue Economy. 2021 recovery after Covid: Coastal tourism most impacted Marine renewable energy is the fastest-growing sector ‘Marine living resources’ (fisheries, aquaculture, seafood processing and trade): 15% of employment, 13% of GVA BUT lowest av. wages. 23/09/2024 Presentation for the Committee on Fisheries (PECH) 3 1. Key challenges PESTLE: PESTLE analysis reveals multiple challenges, key of which are: Key challenges: Marine Space – competing interests including major growth of renewable energy. Ensuring fair green & digital transitions – especially for traditional maritime sectors. Do EU policies address the challenges? Political: Policies pre-date recent challenges due to Brexit, war in Ukraine and tensions with China, suggesting the need for review. Technology: Focused on innovations & the innovators, less on enabling existing operators make green & digital transition.
