LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Science: Understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes (with reference to the effect of invasive species on an island archipelago)
STUDENTS’ OUTCOMES:
To understand and explain the harmful impact human introduced invasive species can have on native species.
KEY VOCABULARY:
invasive species, native species, impact, competition, ecosystem, flora and fauna, distribution
RESOURCES REQUIRED:

FIRE STARTER:
Discuss students’ interpretation of the term ‘invasive species.’ (a species that is not native to an area being introduced and that has a negative impact on the environment) A RESOURCE BROUGHT TO YOU BY GALAPAGOS CONSERVATION TRUST (REGISTERED CHARITY NO. 1043470)
GALAPAGOSCONSERVATION.ORG.UK Do students know of any invasive species that have been introduced to the UK and the impact on its ecosystems? For example, the American signal crayfish that outcompetes native white clawed crayfish, the American mink that escaped from fur farms here cause habitat destruction and decline of the water vole, and Japanese knotweed, a plant that the Environment Agency estimates causes £150 million damage in the UK each year.
GAINING GROUND:
This TED video explains invasive species very well if needed - here ask students to consider how invasive species could be introduced to the Galapagos, an archipelago lying 600 miles away from the nearest mainland. When do they think invasive species could have been introduced? What kind of species do they think would be introduced and what impact would they have on native flora and fauna?
Watch the short video link provided on invasives describing invasives in Galapagos - Using the invasive species cards, students to work in learning partners or small groups to read the information provided. Using their own design, make a map of invasive species throughout the Galapagos archipelago, using a key to show type of species, method and reason of introduction, native species affected and distribution. They may want to categorise the species into animal groups, e.g. mammals. [notes]
