Timespan in the LRM bibliographic universe 5<br>
06
Timespan in the LRM bibliographic universe In previous models, what is now called timespan was an attribute of other entities, e.g., in original RDA:
Date of birth was an attribute of the Person entity
Date of expression was an attribute of the Expression entity 6<br>
Date of birth was an attribute of the Person entity
Date of expression was an attribute of the Expression entity 6<br>
07
Timespan in the LRM bibliographic universe As an attribute, in the FRBR (original RDA) model, timespan could only be descriptive.
In the LRM model, timespan is a separate entity that is capable of having relationships with other entities. 7<br>

Can the timespan entity be described in MARC? Not yet (in descriptive cataloging), but
RDA conceives of timespan as a separate entity with relationships to other entities, so we need to be thinking about it
We already do describe timespan in subject cataloging using MARC records 41<br>

Timespan is a new entity in official RDA that is defined as “a finite period of time.”
Elements for recording dates in original RDA (e.g., date of birth and date of publication) are relationship elements in official RDA. The relationship is between an RDA entity and a timespan.
A description of a timespan must include an appellation element (e.g., preferred name of timespan or authorized access point for timespan). Additional elements for describing a timespan include variant access point for timespan, beginning, ending, category of timespan, and note of timespan.
MARC authority records are not created for RDA timespans, but subject authority records are created for timespans, such as in LCSH and FAST. 48<br>
