We reanalyzed Cassini’s radiometric data with improved techniques to measure Titan’s gravity field and tidal response and answer these questions:
What is Titan’s tidal response? Is it large as reported in earlier studies or smaller as in the later analysis?
What is Titan’s energy state? Can we detect the contribution of tidal energy dissipation to Titan’s gravity field from Cassini data? Significance of Results/Benefits to NASA/JPL
These results challenge an interpretation that stood for decades and represent a paradigm shift in our understanding of ocean worlds. The absence of an ocean in Titan despite strong tidal heating implies that ocean worlds might be less common than recently assumed. However, the presence of a mushy hydrosphere (Figure 2) makes this world more interesting. The presence of sites with highly concentrated organics in aqueous solution might be more favorable for habitability compared to a dilute deep ocean. NASA’s Dragonfly mission to Titan will provide a further test of whether a subsurface ocean exists. NASA’s Europa Clipper and ESA’s Juice will allow testing the new paradigm at Ganymede and Callisto. Future Work
Future efforts will focus on understanding how Titan evolved into the observed conditions and whether the ice is currently melting to form an ocean or if the ocean froze recently. The strong tidal dissipation has also implications for the evolution of the Saturn system. New models are under development to investigate the implications of this groundbreaking finding on Titan’s thermal-orbital evolution.
