UPDATE ON SUPPORT PROVIDED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF SPORT , ARTS AND CULTURE (DSAC) TO THE SOUTH AFRICAN ROADIES ASSOCIATION (SARA) FROM THE PERIOD 2014-2020 13 November 2020 Presented by: DIRECTOR GENERAL OF THE DEPARTMENT OF SORT,ARTS AND CULTURE. MR. VUSUMUZI MKHIZE Contents Background Projects Other Strategic Support Public Protector Remedial Actions Funding Support from 2014 Challenges 2 BACKGROUND In recognition of the role played by SARA in the sector the DSAC has had a long relationship with SARA from as early 1997 under the Department of Arts Culture Science and Technology (DACST). Most of the initial support that the Department provided to SARA was mainly towards the International Programme, where funding was allocated to assist SARA travel with selected youth to attend key international conferences, exhibitions, festivals etc. that are held annually in countries like UK, Germany to name a few. These platforms are of key importance in the sector as they are attended by high level industry leaders, innovators, production suppliers etc. and as such have become a major platform for SARA to network and build relationships such as the Backstage Academy. Other initial support has been towards, emergency administration funding and exchange programme which are focused on training. List of key activities supported (to be elaborated on later in the presentation). International Relations Programme. Live Events Technical Production Conference. SARA House Renovations. 3 PROJECTS International Relations Programme: Through the International Relations Programme SARA has been able to participate at key international Live Event Production and Services industries , Trade Fairs, Conferences and EXPOS. Through these events SARA has developed networks and develop potential business relationships such as the Backstage Academy UK. Some of the sector leaders that SARA met through these networks have become international strategic support for SARA towards its own skills and business development in South Africa such as conducting workshops for youth attending training programme at SARA House; presentations at the annual Live Events Technical Productions Conference (LETPC) that was initiated by SARA. Further to the above SARA has been able to take an average of 2 to 4 youth from South Africa per year to travel overseas and participate at some of the international Trade Fairs, Conferences and EXPOS as part of the International Relations Programme 4 PROJECTS International Relations programme highlights in Europe: attended by SARA.
