Vaping/E-Cigarettes & SchoolsStarted showing up on KSDE Leadership and Kansas State Board of Education radars in Spring 2019.Problems faced by Kansas schools:Students vaping during the school day in and on school grounds.Students experiencing dependence/addiction to nicotine.Areas of schools (i.e. bathrooms) that become centers for vaping and causing discomfort for students.Vaping/e-cigarettes not being specifically identified in policies.Consequences/discipline for those who are using or possessing products.

Vaping/E-Cigarettes Task ForceTask Force formed in July 2019 to take action and provide recommendations to State BOE beginning in August 2019.Representation from: KSDE, KDHE, School Administrators, KASB, KNEA, KASHSAA, Kansas AG, Kansas Dept. of Revenue, Kansas Health Institute, School Nursing, School Counseling, School Resource Officer, Medical Professionals, Parents, College Student, American Lung Association, retail.

4. Task Force ActionsDeveloped “8 Elements of a Vape-Free School” that was sent to schools for beginning of school year.Directed school personnel to KDHE Vape-Free Schools page which includes link to “Kansas Vape-Free Schools Toolkit”Collaborated with KDHE on new signage to include vaping.Presented a draft policy for Kansas Board of Education to Consider at their December 2019 monthly meeting.Prioritizing aiding schools with best practices to address discipline surrounding e-cigarette use and possession by students
