Celebrations and Events Unit 15 Part 3

Celebrations and Events NM remains a major center for the arts. NM’s history is also living history. It lives on through the activities of its people.

Celebrations and Events NM’s Indians, for example, hold yearly ceremonials. These have not changed in hundreds of years. During the summer months some Pueblo Indians celebrate feast days. They most commonly perform the corn dance.

Celebrations and Events The Mescalero Apache hold the Maidens’ Day Puberty Rites and Mountain Spirit Dance in July.

Celebrations and Events In September the Navajos hold the Navajo Nation Fair at Window Rock, Arizona.

Celebrations and Events In September, the Jicarilla Apache celebrate their feast day at Stone Lake.

Celebrations and Events In the fall some pueblos hold their feast days. During this season, the Zunis celebrate Shalako . The Shalako are the messengers of the rain gods.

Celebrations and Events During the winter, pueblo celebrations vary. At Christmas some Pueblo peoples dance the Matchines. Others perform the Deer Dance and the Buffalo Dance.

Celebrations and Events Folk plays recapture NM’s Hispanic heritage. At Christmas some communities stage the Hispanic folk drama Las Posadas . It tells the story of Mary and Joseph seeking shelter for the birth of the Christ Child.

Celebrations and Events Another Hispanic fold drama is Los Pastores . It tells the story of the shepherds seeking the Christ Child.

Celebrations and Events Still another Hispanic folk tradition has found new life. The zaruela , a musical play, has enjoyed a revival in some places. Zarzuelas have been performed in recent years before NM audiences.

Celebrations and Events Traditional luminarias also brighten NM’s Christmas Eves, especially in the northern half of the state.

Celebrations and Events Other events have a local flavor. Hatch hosts a Chile Festival. Portales features the Peanut Valley Festival. Wagon Mound has Bean Day.

Celebrations and Events The Duck Race is Deming draws people from all over. The Festival of the Cranes at Bosque del Apache is a favorite of bird watchers.

Celebrations and Events Crafts shows also remind New Mexicans of both their past and present. Each year Indian craftspeople display their wares at the Santa Fe Indian Market.

Celebrations and Events Also in Santa Fe, the Spanish Market displays the work of traditional Hispanic artists. Their work is based on the New Mexican art forms of the 1700s and 1800s.
