Red Ribbon Week

October 23-27, 2017

The Red Ribbon Campaign was started when drug traffickers in Mexico City murdered DEA agent Kiki Camarena in 1985. This began the continuing tradition of displaying Red Ribbons as a symbol of

intolerance

towards the use of drugs. The Mission of the Red Ribbon Campaign is to present a unified and visible commitment towards the creation of a DRUG-FREE AMERICA.Lincoln will recognize Red Ribbon Week:5th grade student council members will present ribbons to the classrooms and share the message of making safe and respectful choices during the week. On Friday, October 27th it will be Fuel Up Friday! Everyone should wear red and classrooms will be served a sports drink during the day to remember to make safe and healthy choices for their bodies!

MindUp

Students have been learning about their brain and the control it has over their entire body. In learning about the brain, students are then working on recognizing when triggers (something that changes our feelings) occur to engage the thinking part of their brain to make respectful and responsible decisions. Now that we know some about our brain, it is important to know that we can “train our brain” and take mindful moments to slow down and refocus our thinking. Taking a mindful moment may include belly breathing, listening carefully to all the sounds around us, or noticing small details surrounding our environment. There are many benefits to taking a mindful break that include:Ability to regulate ones own emotionsIncreased resiliency (academically, socially, and emotionallyIncreased ability to manage stressIncreased motivation to sustain difficult tasks

Lincoln’s Student Council

This is a very exciting first trimester back at school as we were able to kick off Grade 5 Student Council at Lincoln! There are four representatives from each of the fifth grade classrooms that will be assisting with leadership activities in the school. New representatives will be elected each trimester giving multiple students the opportunity to serve on the council. Some of the activities they will be involved in include Red Ribbon Week, Welcome Committee for new families, assisting in a positive message for the chalk wall, and keeping the lunch menu updated in the hallway. Representatives will be sharing at the LPAC meeting in October more about their roles at Lincoln.
