Formal Writing

Some things to keep in mindSlide2

Italics

Italicize titles of novels, plays and textbooks

Example: Some of us will read

Divergent

for a literature circle novel.Slide3

“Quotation Marks”

Use quotation marks for titles of short stories, poems and articles

Example: We will read the story “Once Upon a Time.”Slide4

Present tense

Use present tense

consistently throughout your writing (for story, novel or play events

)

Example: Prometheus steals fire from Mount Olympus, against Zeus’s will.Slide5

Point of view

Use

third-person (do not use “I”, “me”, “we”, “us”, “you”)

Example: Prometheus is rebellious when he steals fire from the gods.

Instead of

I think Prometheus is rebellious when he steals fire from the gods.Slide6

No brackets

Avoid

using parentheses (brackets

)

Example: Prometheus, a Titan, steals fire from the gods to benefit humans.

Instead of

Prometheus (a Titan) steals fire from the gods to benefit humans.Slide7

One or two

Spell

out numbers written in one or two words

Zeus’s

two

henchmen, Force and Violence, freed Prometheus from the mountain.

instead of

Zeus’s 2 henchmen…Slide8

Avoid this!

Don’t use contractions

such as won’t, can’t, would’ve, he’d, she’d, she’s, hadn’t

Use the full form of these words: will not, can not, would have, he would, she would, she is, had notSlide9

That’s like awesome!

Avoid slang and controversial language

Example: Prometheus is just such a cool Titan because he really like stomped on Zeus when he stole that fire from Mt. Olympus.Slide10

Avoid exclamation marks!!!!

Exclamation marks indicate emotion: too much emotion takes away from a formal writing tone

Avoid: Zeus was so angry with Prometheus! He had him chained to a rock! And then he had some vultures come and eat his liver!

Instead…

Because Zeus was angry with Prometheus he had him chained to a rock while vultures ate his liver.
