Psalm 102:6-7 I am like an owl in the desert, like a little owl in a far-off wilderness. I lie awake, lonely as a solitary bird on the roof.

He is in prison. He is a leader. His age. He’s been betrayed.

Demas has deserted me because he loves the things of this life and has gone to Thessalonica. Alexander the coppersmith did me much harm… The first time I was brought before the judge, no one came with me. Everyone abandoned me.

Voice it

Verses 9-11a Timothy, please come as soon as you can. Demas has deserted me because he loves the things of this life and has gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, and Titus has gone to Dalmatia. Only Luke is with me.

Find a ministry.

Verse 4:11b Bring Mark with you when you come, for he will be helpful to me in my ministry.

Proverbs 18:24 There are “friends” who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother.

“Stand in the rain. When someone is standing in the rainstorms of life many people are willing to tell them to come inside. Some people will offer an umbrella or a blanket. Very few will stand in the rain with them.”

Tend to your temple.

Verse 4:13a When you come, be sure to bring the coat I left with Carpus at Troas.

Befriend the word.

Verse 4:13b Also bring my books, and especially my papers (parchments).

“Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.” “No one will be able to stand against you as long as you live. For I will be with you as I was with Moses. I will not fail you or abandon you.” In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe.

Trust God’s inescapable nearness

O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord. You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand!

Verses 16-18 The first time I was brought before the judge, no one came with me. Everyone abandoned me. May it not be counted against them. But the Lord stood with me and gave me strength so that I might preach the Good News in its entirety for all the Gentiles to hear. And he rescued me from certain death. Yes, and the Lord will deliver me from every evil attack and will bring me safely into his heavenly Kingdom. All glory to God forever and ever! Amen.

Ephesians 1:4 Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes.
