(READ)-Brain Architecture: Transcript
Now in its second edition Brain Architecture is the continued exploration of how the brain works At the very core of our existence the brain generates our thoughts and feelings directs our voluntary interactions with the environment and coordinates all of the vital functions within the body itself This longoverdue new edition explains this oftentimes daunting intricacy and exquisite detail The first half of the book discusses the basic parts and how they work presenting an overview of the nervous system at both the microscopic and macroscopic levels The approach follows three classic lines of thought that proceed from simple to complex the history of neuroscience research the evolution of the nervous system and the embryological development of the vertebrate central and peripheral nervous systems The second half of the book outlines the basic wiring diagram of the brain and nervous systemhow the parts are interconnected and how they control behavior and the internal state of the body This is done within the framework of a new foursystem network model that greatly simplifies understanding the structurefunction organization of the nervous system Written in clear and sparkling prose beautifully illustrated and thoroughly updated Brain Architecture Second Edition is mustread for anyone interested in the science of how the brain works. Presented by: Mary Ann Marchel, Ph D.. University of Minnesota Duluth Unified Early Childhood Studies . Agenda: Monday AM. 9:00-9:30 . Scientific Evidence has Proven the Impact that Speech and Language Have on Reading Skills. The devastating truth about the effects of wheat, sugar, and carbs on the brain, with a 4-week plan to achieve optimum health. In Grain Brain, renowned neurologist David Perlmutter, MD, exposes a finding that\'s been buried in the medical literature for far too long: carbs are destroying your brain. Even so-called healthy carbs like whole grains can cause dementia, ADHD, epilepsy, anxiety, chronic headaches, depression, decreased libido, and much more. Groundbreaking and timely, Grain Brain shows that the fate of your brain is not in your genes. It\'s in the food you eat. The cornerstone of all degenerative conditions, including brain disorders, is inflammation, which can be triggered by carbs, especially containing gluten or high in sugar. Dr. Perlmutter explains what happens when the brain encounters common ingredients in your daily bread and fruit bowls, how statin drugs may be erasing your memory, why a diet high in good fats is ideal, and how to spur the growth of new brain cells at any age. Dr. Perlmutter\'s revolutionary 4-week plan shows you how to keep your brain healthy, vibrant, and sharp while dramatically reducing your risk for debilitating neurological diseases as well as relieving more common, everyday conditions -- without drugs. Easy-to-follow strategies, delicious recipes, and weekly goals help you to put the plan into action. With a blend of anecdotes, cutting-edge research, and accessible, practical advice, Grain Brain teaches you how to take control of your smart genes, regain wellness, and enjoy lifelong health and vitality. Ole . A. Andreassen MD, . PhD. CoE. . NORMENT, . Division. of Mental Health and . Addiction. , Oslo University Hospital & . Institute. of Clinical Medicine, University of . Oslo. Background. . Depending on your point of view the brain is an organ, a machine, a biological computer, or simply the most important component of the nervous system. How does it work as a whole? What are its major parts and how are they interconnected to generate thinking, feelings, and behavior? This book surveys 2,500 years of scientific thinking about these profoundly important questions from the perspective of fundamental architectural principles, and then proposes a new model for the basic plan of neural systems organization based on an explosion of structural data emerging from the neuroanatomy revolution of the 1970\'s The importance of a balance between theoretical and experimental morphology is stressed throughout the book. Great advances in understanding the brain\'s basic plan brain have come especially from two traditional lines of biological thought- evolution and embryology, because each begins with the simple and progresses to the more complex. Understanding the organization of brain circuits, which contain thousands of links or pathways, is much more difficult. It is argued here that a four-system network model can explain the structure-function organization of the brain. Possible relationships between neural networks and gene networks revealed by the human genome project are explored in the final chapter. The book is written in clear and sparkling prose, and it is profusely illustrated. It is designed to be read by anyone with an interest in the basic organization of the brain, from neuroscience to philosophy to computer science to molecular biology. It is suitable for use in neuroscience core courses because it presents basic principles of the structure of the nervous system in a systematic way. It’s no secret that this world we live in can be pretty stressful sometimes. If you find yourself feeling out-of-sorts, pick up a book.According to a recent study, reading can significantly reduce stress levels. In as little as six minutes, you can reduce your stress levels by 68%.
