INTERNSHIP YEAR OVERVIEW

The internship year

has been designed to comply with the ACGME’s/ABOS’s requirements for the PGY-1 year. The year includes: *six months of orthopaedic surgery *one month of surgical skills *one month of intensive care

*one month of neurosurgery

*one month of plastic surgery

*one months of general trauma surgery

*one month of orthopaedic infectious disease

Slide14

SECOND YEAR OVERVIEW

Musculoskeletal Tumor and Pathology Rotation

The musculoskeletal tumor and pathology rotation is an opportunity for the residents to participate in management of musculoskeletal tumor problems and obtain grounding in orthopaedic pathology. The resident participates in all of Dr. McGarry’s Cancer Clinics and gains an understanding of appropriate medical and surgical treatment of musculoskeletal tumorsUNMC Adult Reconstruction

The junior resident on the adult reconstruction service is exposed to the many facets of joint replacement. The prime objective is to gain an understanding of the workup and postoperative care of the patient with an arthritic joint as well as the patient with a failed or infected total joint arthroplasty.

Omaha Veterans Administration Hospital

During the Omaha Veterans Administration Medical Center

rotation, the junior resident is expected to organize and manage clinics and surgeries with the supervision of the chief resident and attending staff.

Hand and Upper Extremity

This rotation serves as the introduction to disorders of the hand and upper extremity. The Hand and Upper Extremity Service rotates between the Nebraska Medical Center , Nebraska Orthopaedic Hospital, and the Veterans Administration Medical Center, and provides the resident with opportunities to gain extensive experience under the direction of Drs. Streubel, Morgan, Firestone, Gaddie, and Bruggeman

Night Float

The resident covers Night Call at UNMC with Chief and attending Backup

Gannon.The

resident’s prime objective on this rotation is to learn the appropriate evaluation and nonsurgical treatment of patients with traumatic and degenerative conditions of the spine.

UNMC Green Trauma Service

The service provides broad exposure to general

orthopaedics

and

orthopaedic

trauma. Emphasis is placed on management of foot and ankle and trauma and post-traumatic reconstruction. The experience also includes instruction in trauma system management and allocation of resources. The resident will work with Drs. Siebler, Mormino, Putnam and Sawatzke and assists in surgery and

clincs

for their patients.

Sports and Shoulder

The Sports Medicine and Shoulder rotation provides experience in clinical and surgical care of the recreational and competitive athlete, emphasizing treatment on and off the field as well as reconstruction of complex shoulder surgery. The resident is fully integrated into the practices of Drs. Tao, and Teusink and the Private Practice of Drs Arnold, Samuelson and Reynolds at The Nebraska

Orthopaedic

Hospital.

RESEARCH PROGRAM

Research Laboratory Facilities There are four full-time dedicated research laboratories within the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation. Residents are required to complete at least one basic or clinical presentation/paper of publishable quality prior to their graduation. These laboratories and the laboratories at the VA are fully at their disposal for hypothesis testing and other methods of research.

Slide26

Orthopaedic

Research LaboratoryBiomechanical

Dr. Hani Haider, Professor Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and his team are focusing their research in this laboratory on knee implant simulation and testing and evaluation of implant (TKR) wear. They are also energetically expanding our research into the booming areas of Computer-Aided Orthopaedics Surgery and exploring carefully the possibilities of robotic surgery in the future for joint replacement. Our laboratories for this area house multi-million dollar equipment ranging from standard specimen test machines to state-of-the-art multi-axis testers and fully fledged highly advanced knee implant simulators, and

motion analysis and ancillary equipment all augmented by

modern computer hardware and software.

Slide27

UNMC and VA MEDICAL CENTER

In addition, our staff and residents have access to laboratory space at the UNMC and Omaha VA Hospital Omaha. These spaces includes surgical suites, radiology and bench space for animal research. The prime areas of interest include Staphylococcus research, osteomyelitis and antibiotic delivery systems as well as fracture healing.

Slide28

CLINICAL RESEARCH

There are 3 full time Research coordinators to help with data base management, research design, IRB application, data acquisition and manuscript writing.

We have a resident research committee which oversees resident research projects and assists with project design and has funds available for resident research grants which can be applied forThe UNMC GMEC office has a resident research committee and coordinator to assist in resident research design and implementation.
