The story of two doctors, a father and son, who practiced in very different times and the evolution of the ethics that profoundly influence health care   Medicine has undergone drastic changes over the decades—from a highly patriarchal system where doctor knew best and made decisions accordingly to today\'s more patient-centered system, where well-informed patients often take the lead. Dr. Phillip Lerner, the author\'s father, practiced at a time when doctors commanded unparalleled respect, making most decisions for their patients, even about life and death. When Barron read in his father’s journals how he’d once thrown himself over the body of a dying patient to prevent his colleagues from resuscitating her, the younger Lerner was shocked. Used to patients who are informed, involved, and even activists, the son saw his father’s action as that of a doctor “playing God,” with the kind of paternalism that has no place in the new reality of medicine. Later, as a seasoned doctor, Barron Lerner came to understand the constantly shifting nature of ethics in medicine. Through his father\'s stories, his own recollections, and his professional expertise, Dr. Lerner investigates the ethical shifts that have shaken the medical profession over the past four decades. The Good Doctor is the story of one American family and its intersection with the transformation of the practice of medicine for doctors and their patients. From the Hardcover edition. Common morality has been the touchstone of medical ethics since the publication of Beauchamp and Childress\'s Principles of Biomedical Ethics in 1979. Rosamond Rhodes challenges this dominant view by presenting an original and novel account of the ethics of medicine, one deeply rooted in the actual experience of medical professionals. She argues that common morality accounts of medical ethics are unsuitable for the profession, and inadequate for responding to the particular issues that arise in medical practice. Instead, Rhodes argues that medicine\'s distinctive ethics should be explained in terms of the trust that society allows to the profession. Trust is the core and starting point of Rhodes\' moral framework, which states that the most basic duty of doctors is to seek trust and be trustworthy.Building from this foundation, Rhodes explicates the sixteen specific duties that doctors take on when they join the profession, and demonstrates how her view of these duties is largely consistent with the codes of medical ethics of medical societies around the world. She then explains why it is critical for physicians to develop the attitudes or doctorly virtues that comprise the character of trustworthy doctors and buttress physicians\' efforts to fulfil their professional obligations. Her book\'s presentation of physicians\' duties and the elements that comprise a doctorly character, together add up to a cohesive and comprehensive description of what medical professionalism really entails. Rhodes\'s analysis provides a clear understanding of medical professionalism as well as a guide for doctors navigating the ethically challenging situations that arise in clinical practice Becoming a Good Doctor focuses on medical ethics in basic sense: the character traits and styles of practice we look for when we seek a doctor\'s help. This book will appeal to doctors and medical students for its sound application of the venerable tradition of virtue ethics to modern medical practice. In this book Paul Carrick charts the ancient Greek and Roman foundations of Western medical ethics. Surveying 1,500 years of pre-Christian medical moral history, Carrick applies insights from ancient medical ethics to developments in contemporary medicine such as advance directives, gene therapy, physician-assisted suicide, abortion, and surrogate motherhood. He discusses such timeless issues as the social status of the physician attitudes toward dying and death and the relationship of medicine to philosophy, religion, and popular mortality. Opinions of a wide range of ancient thinkers are consulted, including physicians, poets, philosophers, and patients. He also explores the puzzling question of Hippocrates\' identity, analyzing not only the Hippocratic Oath but also the Father of Medicine\'s lesser-known works. Accessible to both professionals and to those with little background in medical philosophy or ancient science, Carrick\'s book demonstrates that in the ancient world, as in our own postmodern age, physicians, philosophers, and patients embraced a diverse array of perspectives on the most fundamental questions of life and death.
