They created a crisis in world trade: between 1718 and 1722, they captured and plundered more than 2,400 vessels on Atlantic trade routes. According to American preacher Cotton Mather, "all Nations agree to treat [pirates] as the Common Enemies of Mankind, and to extirpate them out of the world".

Stevenson gives a vivid image that suit the generic conventions of a villain, in this case a pirate: “over the shoulder of his soiled blue coat, his hands ragged and scarred, with black, broken nails, and the sabre cut across one cheek, a dirty, livid white.” the past tense of ‘scarred’ coupled with the filth in his ‘black…nails’ add to the idea of a hard life something we may well associate with the stereotypical features of a character of this kind.
The writer creates the Pirate in ‘Treasure Island’ as a very tough man. This can be seen in the example:
“a tall, strong, heavy, nut-brown man, his tarry pigtail falling over the shoulder of his soiled blue coat, his hands ragged and scarred.” This description sounds unappealing and makes me feel that he is scary.Stevenson creates the image of a pirate in ‘Treasure Island’ as fearsome. For example: “a tall, strong, heavy, nut-brown man, his tarry pigtail falling over the shoulder of his soiled blue coat, his hands ragged and scarred, with black, broken nails, and the sabre cut across one cheek, a dirty, livid white.” the fact he had a ‘sabre cut’ tells us he has been in battle, this would go along with the image of a rough and hard life.DevelopingGoodSecure
