Sanctity of lifeIt means that everyone has a right to life, that all life is special and sacred.Religious people would use this argument to support the idea that God gave life and that is why all humans are sacred. How might this affect a person’s opinion on euthanasia? Make a note of the key word and answer the question on your paper– 7 minutes

VOLUNTARY EUTHANASIA

INVOLUNTARY EUTHANASIA

PASSIVE EUTHANASIA

ACTIVE

EUTHANASIA

COMPULSORY EUTHANASIA

Euthanasia is performed because the patient has asked for it. e.g. a cancer patient who asks for a drug to quicken their death

Doctors give a painkilling drug but do nothing to save the patient.

Euthanasia has to be performed because a person has a certain illness or has reached a certain age. (NOT LEGAL)

Euthanasia is performed without the dying person being told.

e.g. a coma patient.

Doctors give the patient pain killing drugs knowing that the drug will also kill the patient.

Match up the ley words with the definition. Check your answers on the net slide– 10 minutes

Within the UK there is currently no law that directly deals with euthanasia. However, the act of taking a life is dealt with under murder laws, and the 1961 Suicide Act states ‘A person who aids, abets, counsels or procures the suicide of another is liable to imprisonment for up to 14 years.’

Slide8

Active Euthanasia: Active euthanasia is a direct act of a doctor or other to end the life of an individual. e.g. giving a patient an overdose of pain killers such as morphine.Passive Euthanasia: Passive euthanasia is where treatment that would help a person live longer is stopped with the idea of ending the life. e.g. not using life support.

Some doctors may give painkillers to ease suffering knowing that the dosage needed would eventually lead to death. This is known as ‘Double Effect’ and is the only form of euthanasia the Catholic Church will agree to.

Christians believe that Jesus taught that we should ‘Do the loving thing.’ Many people agree with euthanasia as it reduces suffering. For example, a person who is suffering from a terminal illness and who isn’t going to get better may be in a great deal of pain. The sick person and their family will most likely be very distressed. Therefore euthanising the sick person will end their suffering and be a loving act. Moreover, many Christians also believe in the concept of ‘quality of life.’ I think that a doctor’s job is to help people. Changing the law to make euthanasia legal would mean that doctors would not be prosecuted if they were to help patients end their lives if they are suffering from a poor quality of life. Doctors should not have to prolong people’s lives if the person does not wish for it to be so. What is effective about the example? Refer to the success criteria.

Highlight the features and label them.If you spot any other impressive features highlight and label them as well!CLARIFY = if you need to look up any words you are unsure of, look them up in a dictionary.

Level 4 responses (10-12 marks) Paragraph in support of the statement: Why euthanasia can be seen as murderParagraph against the statement: why euthanasia is not seen as Murder Refer to specific examples and Biblical quotations to support your points (these are the same arguents from when we look at abortion) . Your conclusion needs to reach a position on this statement (do not sit on the fence) Try to suggest why the other side is wrong.

“Euthanasia is murder”
