Endocrine System
Mrs. Wharton’s Science Class
Slide2Function
The endocrine system produces chemicals that control many of the body’s daily activities.
Also regulates long term changes such as growth and development.
Slide3Vocabulary
Endocrine glands: produce and release their chemical products directly into the bloodstream (then carrying throughout the entire body)
Hormone: the chemical product of an endocrine gland
Target cells: a hormone only interacts with certain target cells, and its target cell fit together like a key and lock.
Slide4Types
Reproductive- ovaries and testes
Hypothalamus ( brain)- works with the nervous system to help sleep and control hunger- in charge of maintaining homeostasis
Pituitary gland ( brain)- communicates with the hypothalamus to control many body activities. ( growth hormone)
Slide5Negative Feedback
The type of signal that triggers the body to stop producing it.
Ie
: Through negative feedback, when the amount of a particular hormone in the blood reaches a certain level, the endocrine system sends a signal that stops the release of that hormone.
