Endocrine System?

Slide4

The Endocrine System

The

endocrine

system contains

glands, which release chemicals that need to be distributed around the body. Glands

are organs that produce different chemicals that are sent throughout the body to help the body maintain homeostasis.

Slide5

Hormones

Hormones are special

chemicals

your body makes to help it do certain things like

grow up.Hormones are important when you start to go through puberty, which is when you begin

developing into an adult. During this time, the hormones tell your body that it's time to start changing.

What are the parts of the Endocrine System?

Slide7

What are the parts of the Endocrine System?

The endocrine system is made up of the

pituitary

gland,

thyroid gland, adrenal glands, pancreas, ovaries

(in females) and testicles (in males).

7

Slide8

The Pituitary Gland

The pituitary gland is a

small

organ that gives

instructions to all the other glands in the endocrine system. It is commonly referred to as the “master” gland or brain

of the endocrine system.Your pituitary gland sits below your brain.

Slide9

The

Thyroid Gland

The thyroid is shaped like a little

butterfly

or bow tie and it sits under the skin in the front of your neck. All cells in the body need thyroid hormones to work properly. These hormones control how

fast the body uses up energy and are key factors in helping you grow.

9

Slide10

The Adrenal Glands

The adrenal glands work with the hypothalamus and

pituitary

gland, as well as release

hormones that affect digestion, blood, and certain body characteristics.

Adrenal glands also help your body cope with stress and excitement. There are two adrenal glands, which sit above the kidneys. They make important hormones that:

Help the body handle

stress

Control

blood

pressure

Balance

salt

levels

The Pancreas

The pancreas is a

long

, flat gland that lies in the abdomen behind the

stomach. It produces substances that are released into the small intestine to help you digest food.

Cells in the pancreas produce hormones such as insulin, which help control the amount of sugar in the blood.Sometimes, the pancreas may not work properly and fails to distribute insulin correctly, which causes

diabetes

.

The Human Reproductive Organs

Gametes

are the fancy word for sex cells.

The male reproductive system contains an organ called

testicles, which produce sperm. The female reproductive system contains an organ called the

ovary, which produces eggs.Sperm and eggs are the sex cells, or gametes

.

12

Slide13

The Ovaries

The ovaries are part of the endocrine system because they produce

female

sex hormones such as

estrogen and progesterone. The ovaries have three functions. First, they shelter and protect the eggs a female is

born with until they are ready for use.Second, ovaries produce female reproductive hormones called estrogen and progesterone.Third, ovaries release one egg

, or sometimes more, each

menstrual

cycle.

Slide14

The Testicles (testes)

Testicles

are the two small ball-shaped organs inside the

scrotum

(the sac of skin below the penis) that make male hormones and sperm. The main job of

testicles is to make and store sperm and produce testosterone. Testosterone is the male hormone that is responsible for the changes that occur during puberty.
