Biblical Church History Following the Hand of God and the Hand of Satan

DO YOU HAVE AN ABSOLUTE AUTHORITY?

What is the Strategy Satan uses?

1 st He tries to get her to question God’s Word 2 nd He changes God’s Word 3 rd He reinterpreted God’s Word HIS APPROACH WAS RELIGION!

What is the Strategy Satan uses? How does this apply to Us and Church History?

So while tracing Church History we must be looking for Men , Movements and Institutions that are to bring doubt , to change , and to reinterpret the Word of God

What is the Strategy Satan uses? How does this apply to Us and Church History? Tracing the strategy of Satan in the Old Testament Tracing the strategy of Satan in the New Testament Do we really have the Word of God?

THE AVERAGE STATEMENT OF FAITH BY THE FUNDAMENTAL CHURCHES AND BIBLE COLLEGES IN AMERICA TODAY We teach that the Bible is God’s written revelation of God, and thus the sixty-six book of the Bible given to us by the Holy Spirit constitute the plenary (inspired equally in all parts) Word of God. We teach that the Word of God is an objective, propositional revelation, verbally inspired in every word, absolutely inerrant in the original manuscripts , infallible and God-breathed.

THE OTHER STATEMENT OF FAITH BY THE FUNDAMENTAL CHURCHES AND BIBLE COLLEGES IN AMERICA TODAY We teach that the Bible is God’s written revelation of God, and thus the sixty-six book of the Bible given to us by the Holy Spirit constitute the plenary (inspired equally in all parts) Word of God. We teach that the Word of God is an objective, propositional revelation, verbally inspired in every word, absolutely inerrant in the original languages , infallible and God-breathed.

Did God ever intend for us to have an inspired, infallible inerrant Word in our Hands?

TWO LINES OF MANUSCRIPTS

TERMS Autographs This is the term to refer to the original hand written letters and prophecies of the writers such as Moses, Paul, Peter, etc. None of these autographs exist today. Manuscripts This term refers to handwritten copies of the autographs. They were accentually the Bible of that day. There are 5,309 surviving Greek manuscripts that contain all or part of the New Testament. These manuscripts agree together 95% of the time.

TERMS Text This is a term referring to a printed or published copy of the manuscripts. Codex This term refers to a document that is bound to the left as you view it from the front. (Manuscripts were mainly written on scrolls)

TERMS Received Text “ Textus Receptus ” In 1516 Erasmus compiled, edited, and printed the Greek " Textus Receptus " (received text). This is the text that the Protestants of the Reformation knew to be the Word of God (inerrant and infallible). The King James Bible was translated from the " Textus Receptus .“ This Text was derived from the manuscripts that were used and received of that day. They can be traced back to a translation called the “Italic” of A.D. 157” ( 61 years after John on Patmos)

TERMS Critical Text These manuscripts represent the corrupted copies of the Bible, also known as the Alexandrian manuscripts. These manuscripts, many times, do not even agree with each other. The Vaticanus and Sinaiticus manuscripts are part of this group. These are the manuscripts on which Westcott and Hort and the modern versions rely so heavily.

TERMS Critical Text Sinaiticus This manuscript was found by a German liberal that study older manuscripts named Tischendorf . He found this in a Monastery on Mount Sinai in 1844. He was not able to fully receive it 1862. Vaticanus During the mid nineteen century Tischendorf became aware of an ancient manuscript in the Vatican library. This later became known as the Vaticanus This manuscript was available during the Erasmus printing of the Received Text but was refused

Every version of the bible today can be trace back to one of 2 line of Manuscripts or Text The choice of the Bible today is thought to be a matter of personal preference. Most today would tell you the difference between the KJV and the NIV is just modern language The Key is what line of Manuscripts does your bible come from?

“Logos news ” Page 4 of the 1993 summer edition Why does Logos offer four different Greek texts? The reasons may or may not be familiar to you. It all revolves around the issue of the missing Autographs. The mystery of the missing autographs! The mystery’s of the missing autographs may not be a mystery at all. By autograph we mean the original manuscript written by the original author, for example, Paul’s letter to the Romans written and hand signed by Paul. This document was probably passed around so many times and copied so many times that it finally fell apart or got lost among it’s own copies. The point is, we don’t have any known autographs, just copies and copies of copies and the copy machines in those days had legs and could walk. The manuscripts and their copies spread throughout the entire known world. Those manuscripts that went north and west became known as “Byzantine” or “western” texts . Those that traveled south and east became known as “Alexandrian” or “eastern” texts. These are the two basic text families. The manuscripts that propagated in the north and west were copied extensively as Christianity spread throughout Europe. The manuscripts in the south on the other hand were copied infrequently and spent centuries in storage . As a result there are many recent (middle ages) manuscripts in the west and few ancient (third or fourth century) manuscripts in the east. These eastern manuscripts were re-discovered in the 1800’s with the result that nearly every Bible translated since that time has been based on the older eastern manuscripts to the near total abandonment of the western manuscripts of the middle ages .

TWO LINES OF MANUSCRIPTS

I. The Biblical description of the Places of the Bible.

A. Antioch of Syria

(Act 6:1-5) And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables. Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word. And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus , and Nicanor , and Timon , and Parmenas , and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch: 1 ST DEACON

1 ST GENTILE AWAKENING (Act 11:19-21) Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice , and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only. And some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, which, when they were come to Antioch, spake unto the Grecians, preaching the Lord Jesus. And the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number believed, and turned unto the Lord.

1 ST GENTILE AWAKENING (Act 11:22-24) Then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas , that he should go as far as Antioch. Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord. For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith: and much people was added unto the Lord.

1 ST GENTILE AWAKENING (Act 11:25-26) Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus, for to seek Saul : And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.

1 ST CALLED CHRISTIANS (Act 11:26) And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch .

(Act 11:28-30) And there stood up one of them named Agabus , and signified by the Spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius Caesar. Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judaea : Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.

1 ST BIBLE TEACHERS (Act 13:1) Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen , which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.

1 ST MISSIONARIES (Act 13:2-3) As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.

1 ST MISSIONARIES (Act 14:26-28) And thence sailed to Antioch, from whence they had been recommended to the grace of God for the work which they fulfilled. And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles. And there they abode long time with the disciples.

Antioch of Syria Alexander Egypt

1. Egypt is a picture of the World

Egypt is a picture of the World God always calls his people “out of Egypt”

In exodus there are 37 references to God bringing his people out Egypt In Leviticus 8 times God says “… I am the lord that brought you out of the land of Egypt”

Coming out Egypt is a picture of Salvation (Col 1:13) Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: (Gal 4:3) Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world:

(Gen 47:29) And the time drew nigh that Israel must die: and he called his son Joseph, and said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me; bury me not, I pray thee, in Egypt :

(Gen 50:23-25) And Joseph saw Ephraim's children of the third generation: the children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were brought up upon Joseph's knees. And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die: and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence.

Egypt is a picture of the World God always calls his people “out of Egypt” Egypt is always a “downward” move

(Gen 12:10) And there was a famine in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was grievous in the land. (Gen 26:2) And the LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt ; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of: (Gen 39:1) And Joseph was brought down to Egypt ; and Potiphar , an officer of Pharaoh,

( Exo 20:2) I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage . ( Deu 4:20) But the LORD hath taken you, and brought you forth out of the iron furnace , even out of Egypt… (Isa 31:1) Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help ; and stay on horses, and trust in chariots

Egypt is a picture of the World God always calls his people “out of Egypt” Egypt is always a “downward” move Specifically Alexandria

(Act 6:9-13) Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians , and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen . And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake . Then they suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God. And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him, and brought him to the council, And set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law:

CONNECTED WITH BAD BIBLE TEACHING (Act 18:24-26) And a certain Jew named Apollos , born at Alexandria , an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus. This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John. And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly.

CONNECTED WITH BAD BIBLE TEACHING (Act 19:1-5) And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

ROME CONNECTION (Act 27:6) And there the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing into Italy; and he put us therein. (Act 28:11) And after three months we departed in a ship of Alexandria , which had wintered in the isle, whose sign was Castor and Pollux . (Act 28:14) Where we found brethren, and were desired to tarry with them seven days: and so we went toward Rome .

ALEXANDRIA There is a famous school in that city The headmaster is Philo (20 BC- 42 AD) He was influenced by the Greek philosophers, Plato, Socrates, and Aristotle He began to blend the writings of the Old Testament with the writings of these Philosophers

PHILO Philo lived from 20 B.C. to 50 A.D. He is a Jew He’s called the Rabbi of the “Great Synagogue” in Alexander He Establishes a theological school in Alexander

Pantaenus 120-200 A.D. He leads the school to around 190 AD

Clement of Alexandria 150-215 A.D. When he takes over the school, it suddenly referred to as Christian. And no church historian can explain why

Adamantius Origen 184-254 A.D.

E p h e s u s He was born of Christian parents at Alexander, Egypt in 184 AD In 202 AD his father was arrested in the persecutions under Severus, and was martyred . Origen, tried to join his father, but his mother hide his clothes. Therefore he inherited the responsibility of his Mother and 6 siblings. At the age of 19 he became the president of the “Christian University” at Alexander (Walker, History of the Christian Church,74)

E p h e s u s The “fundamentals” he believed : He believed God wrote the Bible He believed Christ was the virgin-born Son of God He believed Jesus Christ died on the cross, was buried, and rose again

E p h e s u s He did not believe that Genesis 1-3 was literal “Who is so foolish as to suppose that God, after the manner of a husbandman, planted a paradise in Eden, towards the east, and placed in it a tree of life, visible and palpable, so that one tasting of the fruit by the bodily teeth obtained life?..And if God is said to walk in the paradise in the evening, and Adam to hide himself under a tree, I do not suppose that any one doubts that these things figuratively indicate certain mysteries, the history having taken place in appearance, and not literally.” (Roberts and Donaldson, Ante-Nicene Fathers, 165.) The “not-so-fundamentals” he believed:

E p h e s u s He believed in the allegorical method of interpreting the Bible “In Origen the process was complete which had long been interpreting Christian truths in terms of Hellenic thinking. He gave to the Christian system the fullest scientific standing, as tested by the science of that age, which was almost entirely comprised in philosophy and ethics. His philosophic standpoint was essentially Platonic and Stoic, with a decided leaning toward positions similar to those of the rising Neo-Platonism, the lectures of whose founder, Ammonius Saccas , he is said to have heard. These philosophic principles he sought to bring into harmony with the Scriptures, as his great Hebrew fellow townsman, Philo had done, by allegorical interpretation of the Bible..This allegorical system enabled Origen to read practically what he wish into the scriptures.” (Walker, History of the Christian Church, 75.) The “not-so-fundamentals” he believed:

E p h e s u s Pope Gregory the Great’s interpretation of the Book of Job: ‘The patriarch’s three friends denote the heretics; his seven sons are the twelve apostles; his seven thousand sheep are God’s faithful people; and his three thousand hump-backed camels are the depraved Gentiles! The two pence given by the Good Samaritan to the innkeeper has the hidden meanings of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. The river Euphrates means the outflow of manners and is not an actual literal river in Mesopotamia The “not-so-fundamentals” he believed:

E p h e s u s One of the few times he took the Bible literal is in Matt. 19:12 when he castrated himself. (Will Durant, The story of Civilization 3:613 ) (Mat 19:12) For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.

E p h e s u s He believed Christ was a created being (i.e. Christ is “A” god…But not “the” God .) Commenting on John 1:18 Origen wrote “Accordingly John came to bear witness of the light, and in his witness-bearing he cried saying… “No one hath seen God at any time; the only begotten God, who is in the bosom of the father, he hath declared Him” Allen Menzies “The Ante-Nicene Fathers, vol 10:343 The “not-so-fundamentals” he believed:

E p h e s u s He is called the “father of the textual criticism .”( conjectural emendation) The result was his famous “ Hexapla .” When Origen castrated himself in 231 A.D., he was excommunicated from the church in Alexandria He then went to Caesarea, where he set up a second “Christian” university By this time, he has written over 6,000 volumes himself (Jerome even asked, “Which of us can read all that he was written.” ORIGEN’S LIFE AND WORK

E p h e s u s 6 . In 249 A.D., under the Decian persecution, Origen was arrested, tortured, and Martyred 7. He bequeathed his library to his favorite student, Pamphilus (c.240-309 ) 8. When Pamphilus dies in 309, he passes on the corrupted reading of Origen to one of his personal disciples..the famous church historian, and famous Bishop of Caesarea, Eusuebuis .
