Grade 5 - The stories titled Ida B and Moon Over Manifest both include events that did not happen exactly how the narrators expected them to happen. Write an essay describing how each narrator’s point of view influenced how these events are described. Be sure to use details from both stories. Grade 8 - In the passages from Confetti Girl and Tortilla Sun, the narrators have points of view different from those of their parents. Write an essay analyzing how these differences in points of view create tension in both stories. Remember to use details from both texts to support your ideas. Grade 5 & Grade 8 PCR

You have read two passages, one from Jacey Choy’s “Red Cranes” and one from Jun’ichirō Tanizaki’s “The Firefly Hunt.” Though Mie and Sachiko, the main characters in the passages, have certain similarities, the authors develop their characters in very different ways. Write an essay in which you analyze the different approaches the authors take to develop these characters. In your essay, be sure to discuss how each author makes use of such elements as • the main characters’ interactions with other characters, • the presentation of the main characters’ thoughts, and • the strong feelings each character experiences at the end of each passage. Use specific evidence from both passages to support your analysis. Grade 10 PCR

Sample Grade 10 Literary Analysis Task & Student Samples

You have read two passages one from Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin and the other The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. Both of the authors write about slavery and the values of society. Write an essay in which you analyze how society is portrayed in the passages. In your essay be sure to discuss how each author makes use of the following - society’s interactions with slaves - the thoughts and feelings of general society as well as slaves - the conflicts the characters face. ***See packet for PARCC scoring rubric Prompt

In these passages, slaves are treated very poorly. They are treated like less than a person. They get sepperated from their families and they are taken away to plantations to work. In both passages there are examples of this. In Uncle Tom's Cabin and in The adventures of Huckleberry Fin, the slaves have to interact with society, the slaves share the thoughts with society and the charectors face conflicts. The charactors face conflicts throughout the stories. In the first passage of the book Uncle Tom's Cabin, the slaves and the buyers at the auction are faced with conflicts. The slave master named haley has to deceide if he wants to buy the old lady slave who has not much perpose in life. She just wants to be sold with her relative because the rest of the family was already split up. He ends up not buying her because he has no use for her. Haley not purchasing the old lady is an example of how society reacts with slaves. The slaves are treated very badly in these passages. In Huck Finn, Jim is seperated with his whole family through slavery. Jim's plan is to save up enough money to buy back his wife and eventually kids. In Uncle Tom's Cabin, Haley reacts with the slaves badly by not doing a simple nice task for them because he does not respect them like they are humans. The thoughts and feelings of slaves by the society are not very good. This is proven in both readings. In Uncle Tom's Cabin, the society is selling slaves in auction which is a terrible thing to do but in their society is a very normal thing. The people during this time period had no affection or sympathy for slaves. Haley seperated a family like it was nothing. That just shows how terribly the white people thought of the slaves. In both passages the slaves are treated horribly. They have a huge function in society but are treated like dirt. Without the slaves no work in the fields would get done and the economy would fall completely. Societies interactions, their thoughts and feelings, and the conflicts that the charecters face all go along with the terrible mistreatings of slaves during this time period. Score = 0

Throughout the world centuries ago, African Americans were not treated how they were supposed to be treated. For example, they were labeled as "slaves" and slaves is a key word for maids and workers. Slaves end up doing everyone's work whether that means planting crops or doing laundry inside the house. In the two passages, it is clear that slaves are not well respected like they should be and are treated as if they are dirt. First, in the passage Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher the customers that are coming to buy slaves are very rude and specific with what condition these African Americans needs to be in for them to be bought. In paragraph ten it states,"Find it a tight pull;—why, she's an old rack o' bones,—not worth her salt." (Beecher). This is an owner talking about the mother of a child who is fourteen years old and they want to be bought together. In paragraph twelve it states,"Anybody 'd be a fool 't would. She's half blind, crooked with rheumatis, and foolish to boot."(Beecher). Just because someone is blind in one eye and has problems does not mean they are not good enough to do your laundry or clean around the house. People that have money are very greedy with what they want and what they must have. This is shown throughout this passage with how they look at the slaves and see if they have muscles and if they are in good conditions. A slave owner will not buy a slave if his gums are not the right color or if he has a lot of cuts because then that consists of maintenance that needs to be done on the slave and the owners are not willing to pay to get them better. Next, in the passage The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain the main Character is trying to save his friend from being a slave and is trying to bring him the freedom that he deserves. In paragraph one it states,"Jim said it made him all over trembly and feverish to be so close to freedom." (Twain). The slaves were feeling sick that they actually were about to be free by running away and not having to work and be bossed around. It is sad to think that people would take advantage of African Americans and make them work endless hours with very little food, drinks, or bathrooms. The working conditions were terrible because they would work in the winter when it was freezing, but would also work in the hot summer days when the sun is blazing hot. People during these times were very selfish and only thought about themselves and not everyone else around them. Hence, the people and the citizens around were okay with allowing people to be treated this way. It is very nice knowing that most slavery has stopped and that we can give everyone the freedom that they should receive. The characters throughout these passages face racism and are not treated correctly. Just think for a minute, if people did not put an end to slavery, our world would be a totally different place right now. Score = 1

In the two passages, society is portrayed negatively. At the time these novels were written slavery and race were huge conflicts. White men and women were very prejudiced towards the African American people. They kept them as slaves, sold and separated their families, and sometimes even beat them. It was dehumanizing, both physically and mentally. In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, Huck is helping Jim, a slave, escape from slavery. In the passage, it is at the part where Huck starts to get really internally conflicted about his decision to help Jim. Huck feels guilty because nobody ever did anything mean enough to him to make him want to help a slave break free. Even though helping Jim is the good thing to do it does not feel like it is because Huck was taught by his surroundings that black men and women are slaves, they belong to white people, they are not to be treated like real people. Huck is caught between what he thinks is right and what society has taught him. Society is portrayed poorly by showing how no one could help these people because back then they were not seen as people. In Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin a slave mother and her son are being sold at an auction. The mother, Aunt Hagar, tries so hard to sold with her son since she is getting old and fears she does not have much time left. Her son is young, a very strong boy and a very good worker, a slave masters dream, and he will be popular for sale. However, Aunt Hagar is very old, she is partially blind and crippled with rheumatism. She would not make for a good sale because it does not appear that she is a diligent worker. When Aunt Hagar asks Haley if she can be sold with her son he says no because he fears she will, "die if I do." (Stowe 29), meaning she does not look like she would be worth the trouble of buying because she will most likely die soon. Society is seen negatively in this passage because Aunt Hagar and her son are desperate to stay together but since Hagar is old and everyone only wants to buy those who can work well and bring in a profit, no one can keep them together. Society split up these families because they are slaves and no one gave them any kindness. Society was really hard on people of color, they were not seen as equals to us even though they are all people. Society was awfully cruel, splitting up families and brainwashing white people into thinking that African Americans are lower. It is evident in Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin that society was against these people and no one was really willing to help without failing or feeling like they were doing something wrong. Score = 2

Since the beginning of time, societies have been criticized for being oppressive. Many great works of literature feature the hardships that people go through to overcome the societal norms of their time. In Harriet Beecher Stowe's, Uncle Tom's Cabin, and Mark Twain's novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the values of society and slavery are the main conflicts that are faced. Although some could argue that these novels show the accepting side of society, they really show how cruel society was because of how harshly slaves were treated and the amount of criticism that people faced for not fitting into the societal norms. The first reason why society was portrayed to be cruel in the novels is because it shows how terribly the people treated the slaves. The lack of respect that the majority of white people had for them was evident. Slaves were not allowed to interact with the families that they resided with. Not only were they abused both physically and emotionally by their owners, but they were not allowed to have a say in everything. In Uncle Tom's Cabin, a mother and her son were split up at a slave auction, despite their begs to stick together. When Aunt Hagar pleaded to stay with her boy, the master simply pushed her away, and told her to "be off,"(Stowe 26). People in this time did not believe that the slaves should be treated with respect. The people never took their thoughts into consideration, as seen in Uncle Tom's Cabin when Aunt Hagar and her boy were separated. Also in the novel, the buyer did not refer to Aunt Hagar by her name, but instead referred to her as, "Darkey"(Stowe 26). People did not keep their racist thoughts to themselves. Society viewed the slaves like they were less than human. The second reason why society was cruel was because people criticized others for having opinions that did not fit the opinions of the majority. In the South, it was not very common to find someone that sympathized with the slaves. In the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Huck struggled to do what he felt was right because he felt oppressed by society. Morally, he knew that he should help Jim escape. However, if people found out that he helped a slave reach freedom, he would not only be punished by the law, but also by everyone around him. Huck, "felt sick" at the idea of helping Jim escape, but he knew it was what he had to do. (Twain 12). During that time, if someone even so much as talked to a slave in a way that was not strictly business, they would be looked down on and criticized. Society made people feel like they could not have their own views on things. Society was portrayed to be very cruel in the novels. Society abused slaves both physically and emotionally. People had to fit into the societal norms, or they would be criticized. Score = 3
