BLACKMARKET defines itself as interdisciplinary research on learning and un-learning, knowledge and non-knowledge in which the formats of knowledge transfer are tried and presented. At 100 single tables, experts from
various fields
sit and offer a portion of their
knowledge that can
be explained and learned in 30
minutes.Slide6Slide7Slide8Slide9
Inspired by encounters with
immigrants
in Johannesburg’s
inner city, notorious today for its state of
urban,
decay
Stephen
Hobbs and Marcus
Neustetter
asked Senegalese
immigrants
to
draw maps of
their hometown, Dakar. Slide10
The artists then traveled to Dakar and used the maps to
navigate the
city. Slide11Slide12Slide13Slide14Slide15Slide16
An exhibition in Dakar presented wall paintings and still projections representing the artists’ walks through navigating Dakar, visiting colleagues and friends of the Senegalese immigrants.Slide17Slide18
It all got started during a
winters
day walk in Helsinki: the artists
Kalleinen
and
Kochta-Kalleinen
discussed how to transform
the
energy
people
use to complain.
In
the Finnish vocabulary there is an expression "
Valituskuoro
” meaning
"Complaints
Choir” used to describe situations where a lot of people complain simultaneously.
They thought: "
Wouldn´t it be fantastic to take this expression literally and
organize
a real Complaints Choir!" Slide19

Ithaca
HOURS
:
Community
Currency
since 1991 Slide22
Creating Community Economics with Local Currency
We printed our own money because we watched Federal dollars come to town, shake a few hands, then leave to buy rainforest lumber and fight wars. Ithaca's
HOURS stay
in our region to help us hire each other. While dollars make us increasingly dependent on transnational corporations and bankers, HOURS reinforce community trading and expand commerce which is more accountable to our concerns for ecology and social justice.Slide23
the Ithaca HOUR is Ithaca's $10.00 bill, because ten dollars per hour is the average of wages/salaries in Tompkins County. These HOUR
notes buy
plumbing, carpentry, electrical work, roofing, nursing, chiropractic, child care, car and bike repair, food, eyeglasses, firewood, gifts, and thousands of other goods and services
..Slide24
Our credit union accepts them for mortgage and loan fees. People pay rent with HOURS. The best restaurants in town take them, as do movie theaters, bowling alleys, two large locally-owned grocery stores, our local hospital, many garage sales, 55 farmer's market vendors, the Chamber of Commerce, and 300 other businesses.Slide25
The Ithaca HOUR Family
One HOUR = one hour basic labor, or $10.00.
Half HOUR = half hour basic labor, or $5.00.
Quarter HOUR = quarter hour basic labor, or $2.50.
Eighth HOUR = eighth hour basic labor, or $1.25.Slide26
