Poetry

Poetry is a special type of writing that is usually written in verse. A poem has rhyme ; however it does not have to rhyme. It also has a flow of words called a rhythm .

A poem has lines or verses that form into a stanza . The Wolf When the pale moon hides and the wild wind wails, And over the tree-tops the nighthawk sails, The gray wolf sits on the world’s far rim, And howls; and it seems to comfort him. The wolf is a lonely soul, you see, No beast in the wood, nor bird in the tree, But shuns his path; in the windy gloom They give him plenty, and plenty of room.

A good poet will express emotions with his writing. Sometimes you may read a poem that makes you laugh; sometimes you may read a poem that makes you cry. No topic is off limits in a poem. A great example of poetry is a song. Have you ever sung along with a song on the radio? A song is a poem with music added to it.

The 1 st Day of School Brand-new crayons and Unchipped chalk. Brand-new haircut, Spotless smock. Brand-new rules— “No running, please.” Brand-new pair of nervous knees. Brand-new faces, Unclogged glue. Brand-new hamster, Shiny shoes. Brand new-teacher, Classroom fun. Brand-new school year’s Just begun. --Jenny Whitehead

The Star-Spangled Banner Oh say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light,What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming—Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight.O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming! And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there; O! say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free, and the home of the brave! --Francis Scott Key

Prose

A prose is a writing that is written in paragraphs . Every species is important to the health of an ecosystem. Removing one species can weaken a habitat, but if a keystone species is removed, an entire ecosystem could collapse. If large predators such as lions disappeared, herd populations would balloon, and grazers would eat up the grass. The savanna would become a sandy desert.

Not Your Average Pet What’s that you say? No pet is considered average in the eyes of its human. While this is true, what we’d like to do is turn the spotlight on those pets that rarely get the appreciation they deserve. Move over cats and dogs—there’s a new crowd in town. Show us the unusual pet you love. From a frolicking fish to a lounging lizard, from a slithering snake to a romping rabbit—they come in all shapes and sizes. Hamsters, turtles, and gerbils, step right up because this is your month! What is it about your pet that makes them so unique? Show us why you chose a chinchilla over a canine or a fish over a feline.
