Introductory Rites Liturgy of the Word The I ntroductory Rites and Liturgy of the Word is celebrated in the ordinary way. The readings may be taken in whole or in part from the Mass of the day or from the texts for confirmation in the Lectionary for Mass

Presentation of the Candidates The priest or catechist presents the candidates for confirmation to the Bishop. If possible, each candidate is called by name and comes individually to the sanctuary. If there are very many candidates, they are not called by name, but simply take a suitable place before the Bishop.

Renewal of Baptismal Promises The candidates renew their Baptismal Promises before the congregation. Bishop : Before you receive the Spirit, I ask you to renew the profession of faith you made in Baptism or your parents and godparents made in union with the whole Church. Bishop : Do you renounce Satan and all his works and all his empty promises ?   Candidates: I do Bishop: Do you believe in God the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth? Candidates : I do   Bishop: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was born of the Virgin Mary, suffered death and was buried, rose from the dead, and is seated at the right hand of the Father?   Candidates : I do

Renewal of Baptismal Promises Bishop: Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who came upon the Apostles at Pentecost and today is given to you sacramentally in Confirmation? Candidates : I do Bishop: Do you believe in the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body , and life everlasting?   Candidates : I do   Bishop: This is our faith. This is the faith of the Church. We are proud to profess it in Christ Jesus our Lord.   All: Amen.

Laying on of Hands The concelebrating priests stand near the bishop. He faces the people and sings or says: My dear friends: in baptism God our Father gave the new birth of eternal life to his chosen sons and daughters. Let us pray to our Father that he will pour out the Holy Spirit to strengthen his sons and daughters with his gifts and anoint them to be more like Christ the Son of God .

Laying on of Hands The bishop and concelebrating priests lay hands upon the candidates (by extending their hands over them). The bishop alone sings or says : All-powerful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, by water and the Holy Spirit you freed your sons and daughters from sin and gave them new life . Send your Holy Spirit upon them to be their Helper and Guide . Give them the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of right judgement and courage, the spirit of knowledge and reverence. Fill them with the spirit of wonder and awe in your presence. We ask this through Christ our Lord. All: Amen.

Procession of Chrism The oil of chrism is proceeded forward and presented to the Bishop

Anointing with Chrism The bishop dips his right thumb in the chrism and makes the sign of the cross on the forehead of the one to be confirmed, as he says : N., be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit . The newly confirmed responds: Amen.

Anointing with Chrism The bishop touches the cheek of the newly confirmed as a sign of peace . The bishop says: Peace be with you . The newly confirmed responds: And with your spirit.
