Grade 5 News!December 2018- January 2019

English Language Arts Our English Language Arts block is broken down into several different subjects--Common Core reading, guided reading, independent reading and writing. Each of these subjects are designed to work together to help our students learn to become better readers while fostering a love of reading! Our guided reading block is still going very strong. We work with texts at each child’s guided reading level and focus on the necessary skills to improve his/her reading. Ask your child what level he/she is currently reading and what is his/her reading goal for January! More importantly, you can ask your child HOW he/she intends to accomplish this goal! At home, students can work toward achieving their reading goals using many different resources. Two of the best resources they have access to are MyOn and iReady. MyOn provides a wide variety of different genres of books, colorfully illustrated and read aloud to the students. iReady provides individualized lessons on skills such as reading comprehension, vocabulary development, and phonics. Students have access to these resources at home and know their login information!MyOn: https://myon.com/iReady: https://cainc.i-ready.com/

We have just begun our next Common Core ELA unit, “If Not by Its Cover, How Do We Judge a Book?” Together, each class will read a book and follow the plot diagram tas they read. At the completion of the unit, we will have a grade wide book review contest to see who can write the best review of their class book! Stay tuned for an exact date and the announcement of the grade’s winners!Mathematics During the months of december and January, our students will be reviewing important strategies (such as using quick pictures, the standard algorithm, and the distributive property) to multiply and divide numbers. We will then extend the students’ understanding to include decimal numbers as well. Following that, students will practice using decimal numbers across all four operations: (Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.) Not all of our students are fluent with their multiplication facts. It is imperative that fifth grade students know all of their multiplication facts from 0 to 12. These students should be practicing their times tables at least once a day using the website xtramath.org or flash cards. All students can log into iReady Mathematics to access lessons on their individual levels at home!Slide2

Slide3

Music

Fifth grade students have been working very hard to complete their original hip-hop projects. Students have been composing lyrics individually and in small groups. Currently, students are exploring hip-hop techniques such as freestyling, using figurative language, and rhyme schemes. Coming up, students will be revising their work and be rehearsing for in-class performances. At home, encourage discussion of musical styles and characteristics heard throughout your daily activities.GymFifth grade will be learning about the Volleyball sport. At this level, students will be playing a game like activity and attempting to the hit the ball over the net, while working with their teammates. They will also learn the three main hits in the sport, (Bump, Set, Spike). Fifth grade will also be working on and progressing their skills by working on shooting, passing and other game like activities. Students will use video footage of actual games and players, and other assessments, to assess their progress and challenge themselves. Important Dates!December 6: 5th Grade trip to NY City Center

Science

For the months of December and January our 5th grade scientists will be investigating all there is to know about Landforms. They will be able to distinguish between the different types of landforms and learn how they are formed by weathering, erosion and deposition. They will conduct experiments using sand, clay and water in a stream table to see how changes on our earth affect the way the land is shaped. In addition, they will learn the layers of the earth, investigate different types of rocks, and how volcanoes and earthquakes are formed.

At home,

you can look up

a fun experiment

on the internet about volcanoes and do this experiment with your child.

MyOn

Students in the fifth grade have been meeting in small groups to examine books about major historical events such as The 1849 Gold Rush or World War II. Students have been locating answers to text dependent questions. In December and January, students will be invited to study a unit called Adventures on the Sea.” Stories such as Robinson Crusoe, Sinbad, and Blackbeard the Pirate will be included.

Social

Studies

In 5

th grade we will learn about the early geological history of the earth and its earliest inhabitants. In addition, our geographical study will begin to focus on the geography of the Western Hemisphere. Throughout December and January, we will be focusing on how the people of the Western Hemisphere have been affected and influenced the geography.Contact informationms.greenberg@ps204.org ms.shainker@ps204.org ms.levitt@ps204.org ms.lehmert@ps204.org mr.maqueda@ps204.org mr.peo@ps204.org 718.960.9520 Slide4

Sinbad y Blackbeard the Pirate. Slide5
