THURSDAY EVENING

26

And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.”

27

Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you.

28

For this is My blood of the new

covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

29

But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.”Slide5

ACTS

20:7

Now on the

first day of the week,

when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul, ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight

.”Slide6

THE BIBLICAL EVIDENCESlide7

Acts

2:42

And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.”

Slide8

1 Cor. 10:16-17

“The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?

17

For we, though many, are one bread and one body; for we all partake of that one bread.”Slide9

1Cor 11:17-22

17

Now in giving these instructions I do not praise you, since you come together not for the better but for the worse.

18

For first of all, when you come together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you, and in part I believe it.

19

For there must also be factions among you, that those who are approved may be recognized among you.Slide10

20

Therefore when you come together in one place, it is not to eat the Lord’s Supper.

21

For in eating, each one takes his own supper ahead of others; and one is hungry and another is drunk.

22

What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and shame those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you in this? I do not praise you.Slide11

1Cor 16:1-2

Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given orders to the churches of Galatia, so you must do also:

On the

first day of the week

let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come.Slide12

THE HISTORICAL EVIDENCESlide13

"As we have already remarked, the celebration of the Lord's Supper was still held to constitute an essential part of divine worship

every Sunday

, as appears from Justin Martyr (A.D. 150)..."

-

Augustus

Neander

, History Of Christian Religion And ChurchSlide14

"This ordinance (the Lord's Supper) seems to have been

administered every Lord's day

; and probably no professed

Christian absented themselves

Thomas Scott

Commentary On Acts 20Slide15

"This also is an important example of

weekly communion as the

practice of the first Christians."

A. C. Hervey

Slide16

The overwhelming consensus of extra biblical sources supports

the conclusion that the Biblical practice was to observe the

Lord's Supper each first day of the weekSlide17

Why the first day of the week, Sunday?

 Slide18

#1

Jesus rose from the dead on Sunday

Mat. 28:1

Mark 16:2 &9

Luke 24:1

John 20:1 Slide19

#2

Jesus appeared to His disciples on Sunday

John 20:19Slide20

#3

The church began on Pentecost, which was on a Sunday

Acts 2 Slide21

#4

As we have read The command to lay by in store was to be carried out on a Sunday

1

Cor

16:1-2Slide22

The Scriptures do not explicitly declare the above to be reasons

why

Christians assembled on the first day of the week, but it might indicate

they did meet on Sunday’sSlide23

ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA

"Sunday,

first day of the week

; in Christianity, the Lord's Day,

the

weekly memorial

of Jesus Christ's resurrection from the dead.

The practice of Christians gathering together for worship on

Sunday dates back to apostolic times..." Slide24

ENCYCLOPEDIA AMERICANA

"From the apostolic era to the present it has been customary

for Christians to

assemble for communal Sunday services

..." Slide25

WORLD BOOK ENCYLOPEDIA

"The celebration of the

Lord's Day in memory

of the resurrection

of Christ dates undoubtedly from the apostolic age. Nothing

short of apostolic precedent can account for the universal

religious observance in the churches of the second century.” Slide26

Both internal and external evidence from the Bible indicates

that Christians met together on the first day of the week, Sunday to remember Christ Slide27

Memorial

Something that keeps remembrance alive

Weekly ReminderSlide28

Sacrifice

An act of offering-up something precious

Perfect/SinlessSlide29

Proclamation

*We proclaim our faith.

*We proclaim that his death was indeed for our sinsSlide30

Communion

How Deep A Fathers LoveSlide33

We have read the written prophesy that our savior would come to this earth, live as a man and be beaten and led as a lamb to the slaughterSlide34

We have read scripture as the day and frequency we are to partake of a supper he instated for us to remember himSlide35

We have been given definitions of words to help our minds think about what it is we do each weekSlide36

It’s now in the early morning hours
