What is Reader’s & Writer’s WorkshopThe Reader's and Writer's Workshop was created by Lucy Calkins in partnership with Columbia University. The workshop model is an incredibly efficient method of teaching reading and writing. Within the workshop structure, teachers are able to address both the whole group’s needs as well as differentiating for the needs of small groups and individuals. By utilizing this instructional practice, educators are essentially getting the most “bang for their buck!” When successfully implemented, the workshop model allows teachers to not only meet standards but also provide students the time and support they need to grow into fluent readers and writers. Workshop is :A component of a balanced literacy blockStandards basedDriven by student assessmentDifferentiated instruction (by level, interest, groupings)

Mondo Bookshop Facilitates this modelWith the Reader's and Writer's Workshop Program, students have the opportunity to choose the material and books that they read for independent reading according to their reading level. The Mondo Bookshop program provides our teachers and classrooms with the program outline and materials to engage students in materials that are of great interest and meet their needs. Mondo Bookshop is the final component with the Being a Writer and Recipe for Reading programs that creates sound English/Language Arts instruction in grades K – 5 in our classrooms.

What does mondo look like in action? There are four components to the reading lessons:Mini-Lesson/Read Aloud: The mini-lesson is focused on the reading skill that the students need as aligned to the standards. This part of the lesson enables the students to know what they will be doing in their small group and independent reading.Independent Reading: During this time, students read a book of their choosing that meets their individual reading levels. During independent reading time, students develop the stamina to read for an extended time. Guided Reading: In guided reading, the teacher works with individual students and small groups on explicit skills that have been determined through formative assessment.  The remaining students work in centers on pre-determined tasks. This portion of the lesson can link all three areas: reading, writing, and word study.Shared/Closing Conversations: In the conclusion of the reading workshop strategies are reinforced with whole-class conversation. Students have the opportunity to share something they learned as readers, or one of many conversations about being a reader and the reading community in the classroom .
