Life Cycle of a Star Nebula: Transcript

Baby star Composed of gas and dust Protostar Center of nebula begins to shrink as it gets hotter Nuclear fusion begins Main Sequence Middle Age Star will spend most of its life in this stage. Hubble Telescope. Compiled by Chris Wolfram, RA University of Maryland-College Park. The Red Spider Nebula. . Huge waves are sculpted in this two-lobed nebula some 3000 light-years away in the constellation of Sagittarius. This warm planetary nebula harbors one of the hottest stars known and its powerful stellar winds generate waves 100 billion kilometers high. The waves are caused by supersonic shocks, formed when the local gas is compressed and heated in front of the rapidly expanding lobes. The atoms caught in the shock emit the spectacular radiation seen in this image.. Life Cycle of A Star. Lesson Goals. 1. Define the terms: . Luminosity. , . Stellar Classification, Stellar Nebulae, . Red Giant, White Dwarf, S. upernova. , . Neutron . star, and . Stellar . B. lack . Learning Objective:. To learn about the life cycle of a star.. Learning Outcomes:. All: Will be able to . correctly name (C) . and simply describe . (B)the . phases in a life cycle of a . star.. Most: Will be able to . Amole. Spectra of Science. 2013. What are Stars?. A large celestial body of hot gas that emits light. Greeks grouped stars in patterns called constellations. Use the unit light-year to measure distances between stars. Planetary Nebulae. . The ‘Ring’ Nebula. . ‘Planetary’ Nebulae. discovered by Herschel. Planetary Nebulae are . Shells that . Look Like. . Rings. . . despite the name, they have . nothing to do with planets. Generally speaking, . there are two main life cycles for stars. . . The factor which determines the life cycle of the star is its mass. . . 1 solar mass = size of our Sun. Any star less than about three solar masses will spend almost all of its existence in what is called the “Main Sequence”. . NEBULA. A nebula is a cloud of . hydrogen gas. . and dust in space.. Nebulae are the birthplaces of stars.. There are different types of . nebula: An . Emission . Nebula: such . as Orion nebula, glows brightly because the . 157. Why is it called a . “Black hole” … when its not a hole!. Why does crushing the sun to the size of a town make it more dense?. How are super giants and red giants similar?. Which live longer High or Low mass stars … and why do think one lives longer than . Starlab. quiz: . http://www.houghton.edu/physics/course-websites/phys-141-cosmology. /. . How Do Stars Form?. Topics. :. Nebulae. Protostars. HR diagram. Compression Waves. OB Associations. Supernovae Clusters. Do Now. SWBAT explain the life cycle of different types of stars. Turn in your Homework. Grab your clicker. Complete the “Are we made of star stuff” Misconception sheet.. January 24. Waning Crescent. Chap 17-18: Stellar Evolution – the Life and Death of a Star… Here’s the story we’ll tell… Lowest mass stars and their evolution Low mass star evolution High mass star evolution Stellar death, and stellar corpses Stars form in a cloud of dust and gas in space called a nebula.. How do stars form?. A force from outside the nebula causes the cloud to condense into stars. . Example: a shockwave. Gravity causes the particle in the cloud to contract.. What are stars?. And what are they made of?. Stars are huge, hot, bright balls of gas.. Stars have different temperatures.. Stars are of different colors.. Stars are made of different elements.. Betelgeuse.
