Justification for Fast-Track: AR 17 -In Support of Suicide Prevention Week We would like AR 17 -In Support of Suicide Prevention Week to be considered for fast-track at this week's meeting. Studet Government was only recently informed of the Counseling and ental Health Center's Suicide Prevention Week and their programming efforts, and because they will host this important event the week of September 20th, n be a Prevntion t w ARI 7 In Support of Suicide Prevention Week Author: Representatives Matt Daley, Janette Martinez Sponsors: Representatives Matt Daley, Janette Martinez, John Woods, Bernadette De La Cruz WlfERE*SrAi-Ihe-lJ.AWei:sizy..o.U.ei-aml-49--percent-of-graduate-student-s­repoi:t..ha¥ing-seme ... form...o-f-sufo-idakh-i+1king.awome poiut iu their IW-es;...ami.!- WHEREAS, At The University of Texas at Austin, 15 percent of undergraduate students and 14 percent of graduate students say that they have seriously considered attempting suicide at some point in their lives; and2 WHEREAS, At The University of Texas at Austin, eight percent of undergraduate students and three percent of graduate students have attempted suicide at some point in their lives; and3 WHEREAS, Suicide is the second-leading cause of death among college students; and4 WHEREAS, The University has launched a new suicide prevention program, entitled "Be That One," which advocates "suicide prevention through education, outreach, and peer support;" and5 WHEREAS, The University's efforts in preventing suicide include it's first Suicide Prevention Week, to be held from September 14 to September 18, which is "dedicated to raising awareness about suicide and suicidal behaviors among our students;" and6 WHEREAS,

Suicide Prevention Week will feature a suicide prevention workshop, an address from nationally-known speaker on mental health Ross Szabo, a presentation of the film "Flashpoint" by The University of Texas Police Department, an interactive exhibit discussing the warning signs of suicidal thinking, and a BEVOnomics , s RESOLVED, That the Student Government of The University of Texas at Austin believes that it is crucial for students to be well educated about suicide prevention because students can help prevent suicide by seeking help from others when needed and learn how to reach out to peers in crisis. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Student Government of The University of Texas at Austinapplauds the Counseling and Mental Health Center and many other campus partners for their work in bringing Suicide Prevention s s RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be sent to the Office of the President, Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, Counseling and Mental Health Center, Office of Financial Services, Division of Housing and Food Services, Student Emergency Services, Dean of Students, Greek Life and Intercultural Education, University of Texas Police Department, University Health Services, Multicultural Information Center, Gender and Sexuality Center, The School of Social Work, and the Department of Educational Psychology. 1 National Research Consortium of Counseling Centers in Higher Education, Suicide Ideation Survey.
