Genesis 32:24-30

: A moment where God could seem reluctant to share His name?

Slide8

A PASSAGE THAT FURTHER REVEALS THE ANSWER:

Matthew 16:13-18

Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some

say

John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. “I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.

descriptors

1.

LINGUISTICS

a word or expression used to describe or identify something.

2.

COMPUTING

a piece of stored data that indicates how other data is stored.

In computing, a descriptor is used in compilers and compilers translate computer code written in one language (the source language) to another language (the target language)—mainly source code in high level languages to lower level languages

His Names reveal His WAYS!

Psalm 86:11

Teach me your way, LORD, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.Psalm 23:3 You refresh my life. You are true to your name, and you lead me along the right paths.

HIS WAYS HAVE PURPOSE AND PATTERN

!

Slide13

Peter: three denials;

three affirmations; three loves;

three calls to the Gentile world…

He has purpose and pattern for you, too!

Slide14

THE ABUNDANCE OF NAMES of God (including many compound names) represent His choice to reveal (not just identify) Himself more and more fully to us—the opposite of the lie of the garden!

They also demonstrate His (YAHWEH) intention to “become what He will become” for us experientially and not just in theory or theology! His names POINT TO what He wants to become for us!

It’s a pattern with Him: We find ourselves in a situation and He whispers: Observe me this way here….

Slide15

Many of the Compound Names of God are with YHWH (or Jehovah)—

But many are also with El or Elohim….

…and these are some of His eternal qualities…the patterns in His divine nature, evidenced in creation and beyond…

Slide16

El Roi

Genesis 16:13

She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: "You are the God who sees me," for she said, "I have now seen the One who sees me."GOD OF SEEINGThe God Who Sees MeThe God Who Opens Our Eyes

Slide17

ONE OF GOD’S MAIN GOALS IS TO AID YOUR SEEING—OF THE KINGDOM!

John 3:3

Jesus replied, "Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again."Luke 17:21 “…BEHOLD, the Kingdom of God is within you (or in your midst)…”

Slide18

El-Olam

Everlasting God or “God of Everlasting Time”

Psalm 90:2Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.Psalm 93:1-2The LORD reigns, he is robed in majesty; the LORD is robed in majesty and armed with strength; indeed, the world is established, firm and secure. Your throne, O LORD, has stood from time immemorial. You yourself are from the everlasting past.

Slide19

The ”Visions of God” described by Ezekiel:

…give us just a taste of what it’s like to be El Roi and El Olam…

Slide20

El

Gibhor

: Mighty God. (Isaiah 9:6)For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.El Hakabodh: The God of Glory (Psalm 29:3)The voice of the LORD is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the LORD thunders over the mighty waters.

El

Hayyay: God of My Life (Psalm 42:8)By day the Lord directs his love, at night his song is with me —a prayer to the God (El) of my life (Hayyay). Elohim Chaseddi: The God of My Mercy (Psalm 59:10)My God of mercy shall come to meet me; God shall let me see my enemies defeated.Elohim Machase Lanu: God Our Refuge (Psalm 62:8)Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God (Elohim) is our refuge (Machase Lanu).

Slide21

Elohim Chayim: The Living God. (Joshua 3:10)

This is how you will know that the living God (Elohim Chayim) is among you and that he will certainly drive out before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites,

Girgashites, Amorites and Jebusites.Jeremiah 10:10a But the LORD is the true God; he is the living God, the eternal King.

Psalm 42:2

My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?I Timothy 4:10 That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe. When chaim (chai) speaks of God, it means the Living One—the Fountain of Life…Chaimzoe. LIFE!!! Zoe = ABSOLUTE LIFE; LIFE AS GOD HAS IT!

Slide22

YAHWEH Elohim. -- The LORD God!

Genesis 2:4 –opens the second creation narrative, switching from Elohim to YHWH Elohim!

CREATOR PLUS PERSONAL NAME: the personal God who rules over Israel, is at one and the same time the universal God who rules over all.Implies ongoing creation: He will be what He will be—to us—continually and in every situation! The very name is our invitation into ongoing PERSONAL ENCOUNTERS with the King and Creator of the Universe!Psalm 51:10

, The Message

God, make a fresh start in me, shape a Genesis week from the chaos of my life. The word used for “create” takes us back to Gen. 1, and it means to create from nothing. David knew he had no goodness without God placing it within him. David wanted a new creation heart, not just the old one changed.

Slide23

Isaiah 40:27-28

Includes: Yahweh; Elohim; El-Olam; and the verse before implies El Roi!

Why do you complain, Jacob? Why do you say, Israel, "My way is hidden from the LORD; my cause is disregarded by my God"? Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.

26:

Lift up your eyes on high: Who created all these? He leads forth the starry host by number; He calls each one by name. Because of His great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.

Slide24

He is not just teaching us a list of names! He is using each name as a

PORTAL

to get us into all that He is and all He wants to become for us.

He is inviting us to observe Him in increasingly intimate ways and partake of the patterns of His wisdom and ways!

He is inviting us into the dance of the Trinity! Intimacy! His Names are invitations…

Slide25

“Name" in Hebrew:

s

hem—an appellation, as a mark or memorial of individuality

; by implication honor, authority, character, renown, report.

Romans 15:13Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Slide26

One of the most beautiful concepts in the Bible: they shall ALL KNOW ME, from the least to the greatest!

He’s wants to open the portal into ALL THAT HE CAN BE FOR YOU….in every situation.

Anti-Christ: anything that replaces and tries to lord it over your direct contact (Deep to deep; spirit to spirit) with God!

Slide27

monks later added vowels. (

Jehovah

is a Christian anglicized vocalization of this name using the vowels of Adonai.) Dynamic tension: too holy to say versus CALL ON HIS NAME!!!!

Too Holy to say?

VOWELS added from ADONAI?THE FINISHIED WORK OF CHRIST LETS YOU SAY HIS NAME!!!!
