COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT

Community empowerment through mobilization of individual artisans into Self Help Groups (SHGs) was tried across India in the past. However the model was not found adequate because of diversified craft categories.

From 2019-20 onwards, producer companies have been formed to empower and to organize the sector.

In producer Companies artisans are the shareholders and board of members of the company.

The company carries on business of production, processing , promotion, designing, marketing of handicraft Items.

Government only provides handholding support for the formation of producer companies and need-based interventions in the initial years.

So far, 57 producer companies have been formed. More

than 65 clusters

were identified for the current year.

Observations:-

Minimum duration of handholding: 3 years

Initial training of office bearers required

Product selection in marketing stalls –complicated

E-marketing – better option.***9
