The Theory of Wormholes

By: Ivy MoralesSlide2

How do they work and what do they do?

Wormholes are bridges that connect two different points in space-time .

Wormholes, theoretically create a shortcut that could reduce travel time and distance.Slide3

Who came up with the theory?

Albert Einstein and Nathan Rosen used the theory of general relativity to suggest the existence of "bridges“ ,wormholes, through space-time.Slide4

What are they made of?

Wormholes are theorized to be a black hole that connects to a “white hole”. A white hole is a theoretical celestial object that expands outward from a space-time singularity and emits energy, a reversed black hole.Slide5

Is it possible to travel through them?

There are few problems with travel first is how big they are(see next slide)

Second they collapse quickly, though in recent research wormholes containing “exotic” matter can stay open and unchanged for longer periods of time. There is another possibility that wormholes can be stabilized with “regular” matter.Slide6

How big are they?

wormholes are predicted to exist on microscopic levels, about the size of .0000000001 yoctometers or .000000000000000000000000000001 millimeters which is a trillion times smaller than a proton. However, as the universe expands, so there is a possibility that some may have been stretched to larger sizes.Slide7

What is “exotic” matter?

Exotic matter is a term which refers to matter that would somehow differ from the norm and have "exotic" properties. Exotic matter contains negative energy density and a large negative pressure. Today's technology is isn’t advanced enough to enlarge or stabilize wormholes, even if they could be found. However, scientists continue to explore the concept as a method of space travel with the hope that technology will eventually be able to utilize them.Slide8
