The Holy Spirit is a Person:

7

John 16:13-14

John 15:26John 16:7-8 (

The Greek word for Spirit (pneuma) is neuter in gender, yet the Bible uses masculine pronouns (“He,” “Him”) to refer to the Holy Spirit.

Slide8

8

The Bible presents the Holy Spirit as doing personal and relational things (speaking, thinking, feeling, acting). If one can do these personal things in a relationship with another person; they too must be considered a person.

The Holy Spirit is A Person

As Christians

(accepting Scripture as authoritative)

we must hold fast to the fundamental

revelation that the Holy Spirit is a

Person; in

the

same sense

that the Father is a

Person

and that the

Son is a

Person.

Slide9

“The

current trend has been to emphasize the present work of the Spirit without consideration of His Person; without which His work has no real foundation.”

John F. Walvoord, long-time president of Dallas Theological Seminary

The Holy Spirit is A Person

Some have held to the general position that the Holy Spirit is an impersonal energy proceeding from God. (Socinians & Arians)

Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the

sky

and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

Genesis

1:26

Slide10

10

The Holy Spirit is A Person

Socinians deny the distinct person of the Holy Spirit; but they concede His eternity, because they regard the Spirit as the influence or effluence of the eternal God.” (Study by Shedd)

The Holy Spirit as a person

was wholly denied by the Arians, and he was considered as the exerted energy of

God. Differing from the

Socinians

, Arius and his followers denied the eternity of the Holy Spirit, making Him a creature.

The Holy Spirit is A Person

Socinian:

Socinianism is a theological and religious movement that developed during the seventeenth century and is fundamentally anti-Trinitarian with a belief that Jesus is a divinely inspired person with exceptional abilities to keep the commands of God.

They reject the views of orthodox Christian theology on God's knowledge, on the doctrine of the Trinity and the divinity of Christ, and on soteriology (religious doctrines of salvation).

They rejected the doctrine of original sin believing that humans were created mortal in the beginning and would have died naturally whether Adam and Eve had eaten from the tree or not.

They reject the propitiatory view of atonement.

(Latin: Faustus Socinus)

Forms of Socinianism continue today in the Unitarians and the Jehovah's Witnesses.

Arianism teachings

were first attributed to Arius (250–336 AD), a Christian presbyter in Alexandria, Egypt.

Arianism a Non-Trinitarian belief that asserts that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, created by God the Father, but distinct from the Father and therefore subordinate to the Father.

Arius believed in the uniqueness of God, who is alone self-existent (not dependent for its existence on anything else) and immutable; the Son, who is not self-existent, cannot therefore be the self-existent and immutable God.

Because the Godhead is immutable, the Son, who is mutable, must be deemed a creature who has been called into existence out of nothing and has had a beginning. Moreover, the Son can have no direct knowledge of the Father, since the Son is finite and of a different order of existence.

Unitarianism

is the belief that God exists in one person and not three.

Denies

the Trinity, the deity of Christ, the personhood of the Holy Spirit, eternal punishment, and the vicarious atonement of Jesus.

The Universal Fatherhood of God

The spiritual authority and leadership of His Son Jesus Christ

The trustworthiness of the Bible as containing a revelation from GodThe certainty of just retribution for sinThe final harmony of all souls with God

Unitarian Universalists formulated the five principles of the Universalist Faith in 1899.

Slide14

14

The Holy Spirit is A Person

Unitarianism

Other beliefs that they hold a truth.

Salvation is by grace through faith and not by works in any way.

Jesus became the Son of God at His baptism.

The Holy Spirit is not a person, does not have a

will. There now is and will be rewards and punishments according to one's actions, but this does not consist of the traditional doctrine of Hell.Human reason and experience should be the final authority in determining spiritual truth.

Instead of God and His Word being the final authority on truth and error or right and wrong, Unitarian subject God and His Word to their understanding, feeling, and reason.

Charles Spurgeon on the Subject of the Holy Spirit

Who can measure the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives?

When we are in the dark, He brings the Light. When our minds are perplexed, He gives the Answer. When we need an encouraging promise, He provides the Word. When we are lost, He shows the Way.

“You can experience the Spirit of God living within you, guiding and empower your daily life.”

Discover the joy of having the Spirit of Christ within you, and learn how He will, remind you of God's promises, guide you in your decisions, intercede for your needs, strengthen your faith, and comfort you in your sorrows.
