Scientific Terms- Defined
Pure Substance
: Contains only one type of particle.
Homogeneous Mixture (solution)
: Made up of at least two type of particles. The particles are distributed evenly throughout the mixture. To the naked eye there appears to be only one substance
Heterogeneous Mixture
: Made up of at least two types of particles. The particles are not distributed evenly throughout the mixture. At least two different substances are visible to the naked eye.Slide3

Classifying Matter- Mini Lab
You will be numbered from 1-5
All the 1’s will be in a group, all the 2’s will be in a group etc.
Each group will be given a container
The group is responsible for deciding what category of matter the substance in the container belongs too
Heterogeneous mixture
Homogeneous mixture Element Compound
Each group will rotate through all the containersSlide6
Learning Intentions
By the end of the class I will be able to:
Part 1- Bill Nye
Understand the role of marshes in an ecosystem
Part 2- Lesson
Describes
the properties of a
solutionDescribes the properties of a mixture Distinguishes
between a solution, a homogenous mixture and a
heterogeneous mixture Slide7
Let’s Practice
You have been asked to identify some substances in beaker in a lab. Before you are able to identify the substances you have to separate the mixtures. You will need to:
Identify the type of mixture to be separated.
Choose a separation technique
Briefly describe why you chose the technique you did.Slide8
Beaker 1
You can clearly see brown bits in the water. You see a layer forming at the bottom of the beaker.
Beaker 2
You see a blue substance that is clear. There are no suspended particles.
Beaker 3
You see a cloudy substance in the beaker but all the particles are suspended and there no particles at the bottom of the beaker
Beaker 4
You see two layers formed. One layer is heavier and sinks to the bottom.
